Expertise

I didn't think this should be in the Chit Chat forum because it has to do with VB. So I am posting it here. If it's in the wrong place, you know what to do John :rolleyes:.

My question is, what is everyone's area of expertise in VB? (I'm curious)

Winsock and LAN! I learnt most of the Winsock things the hard way, so I don't forget alot of its things.

Hmm...i guess it would be anything that involves VB and the NET. I love interfacing my programs with an online database...reffer to server side scripts(php/mysql) and so on. I can't wait for the release of VB7 b/c i'm expecting it to be more web related.

Basically, my work is centred around interface/usability engineering and object based design and development. Also do a fair bit component development, particularly graphical components.

Thats the point of VB... you shouldn't need to specialize in any one particular "thing".

I've done everything from develop against most major Database Systems, Winsock, Writing VB as NT Services, Class structured support DLL's, Financial Packages, Commercial Property Management, Statistical Analysis, New Interfaces, Improved System Control Apps (ie replaces User Manager), Active Server Pages (VBScript is as easy as VB), Internet Installation Utilities ... etc, etc...

I'm still interested in hearing more about people's expertise areas in VB. Please, don't be shy, post, this is interesting.

I don't know if I can say I'm an expert, but with about 15 years of programming various languages (ASM, Pascal, AMOS, C(++) and some scripting languages - All on the Amiga, For the PC: A bit of ASM, lots of Pascal (for Dos & Windows), a tiny bit of C(++) and QBasic and Finally Lotsa VB!) I think I am best at optimizing code.

Altough computers today have lotsa HD Space and very fast CPU's I still like it if I can optimize my code in such a way the executable becomes 1 or 2 bytes(!) smaller, or memory usage is a few kb less... Also optimizing loops etc is what I like. If something takes 0.0000001 sec, why not try to do it in 0.00000005 sec? That's 200% speed increase (although you wouldn't notice ;) ).

Math is what I like. Calculating stuff, working with Bits instead of MegaBytes... Converting stuff, and make usefull small utilities.

I wrote allmost anything, from simple word-processors to scheduling apps, I wrote an Agenda-type of program, an Adress book and a few MP3-routines (extracting Layer #, bitrates and Tags etc). I wrote (DAO) database apps and am now working on ADO apps... I wrote sound-processing (not real-time, just working with files), Image compressing & conversion, File compression and Security routines for Passwords and transfering data over a non-secure connection...

If I like the "assignment" (which I usually think of myself) I get to my computer(-s, I own 3!) as fast as I can and start coding.

But still, I don't think I'm a real expert on anything. I know a lot of lotsa stuff, but not "Everything" of anything.
I also like the idea of thinking at the end of the day: "Hey, I learned this 'n that today.. What will I learn tomorrow?". If I wouldn't have that, I think I'd lose my interest very fast... So I hope I can keep learning, and technology stays about a step ahead of me...

My expertiese or just favorite subject is to help people on the internet such as a program with tons of links, chat stuff, electronic ID's etc.

Well, i am not some big expert but i consider my self an advanced programmer in the field of working with strings , files and some system programming. But there is always something new to learn.

Well I must say I don't realy have a field of expertise right know. I'm a little bit of everything. I like to program with big Oracle and SQL servers to make a good interface using ADO.

I'm just starting in the field of what I call Real Data Objects. I've build them before, but not as how it should be done.

Besides VB I also program VBA, Visual C++ and recently Visual Java.

I'm also a systemmanager or how do you say that in English. I'm responsible for all PC's within the organisation. Luckely I don't have to do all this work alone.

I would like to know more about the Internet though. I've been busy with databases for solong that I don't know anything about programming for the internet using VB, and with the upcomming VB7 I think it's about time I started.
