Re: Did anyone get less computer lessons when the went to high school?
we had 2 2400 baud terminals, and one 300 baud teletype that we were allowed to use to dial into a HP minicomputer to learn Basic. 3 people per day got to use the machines, and half of your time was spent printing out your work to check it untill the next time you got to use the machine. We probably only had 8 days per semester to use the machine, but I spent hours per day before and after school. Of course, after hours, everyone wanted to get on the machines, as the game account was turned on. We lived in the computer room. You have to do whatever you can to get computer time.
Now its unbelievable that almost every kid in school has there own computer at home. I would have locked myself in my room until I had learned everything there was to learn about the machine.

Re: Did anyone get less computer lessons when the went to high school?
I never had computer classes in my school
-
Re: Did anyone get less computer lessons when the went to high school?
Our department of education has made it mandatory for all students in high school to have basic computer knowledge, how many periods or sessions that implies i got no idea, although they won't give us any more computer rooms to cope with the increased load, go figure.

Re: Did anyone get less computer lessons when the went to high school?
In every step of the way in your school life you should have computer lessons because computers are now and the future and are great things. Take french lessons for example (or any other language lesson) most people probaly wont need to know that so it would be better to replace them with computer lessons.

I agree, in our modern world, they should be mandatory, the problem is, they don't provide the resources to make it happen.

Re: Did anyone get less computer lessons when the went to high school?
In High School we didn't have any decent machines, only about 20 Archimedes rigs.
In college they had a LAN with four P100 boxes in a row. Me and my mates Chris & Joel pwnd it. Quake tournaments after hours and online gambling. Sweet.
I learned all about windows in a semester and I started coding for windows the same year (VBA!). Then we disabled the RM windows shell and got the admin's password with a spoofed login screen. God bless Win95a.
Never had a single computer class in my life apart from City And Guilds but that was only to ask for the exam immediately.
The sad fact is that most programmers will find conventional computer classes inadequate. We are already advanced users and do not waste our time with how to do a mail merge in word or whatever. For the kinds of classes we require we should look to specialists.
-
Re: Did anyone get less computer lessons when the went to high school?
Argh... Classes are required at my skewl, 40min a day in grade 9-10. Nothing but "All the right type" and Mail merge. :(
This year i took a advanced course... and i got Front Page, Mail Merge
Well it cant really complain, i got 80min a day to play around on the internet, and the final project took me 3 days to do (this project was suspose to be done over the entire semester)
Most of my computer classes are unbareable, so borring.

Re: Did anyone get less computer lessons when the went to high school?
Well in the UK when we get to high school - who have the resources - we only get 8 computer lessons  becuase were mixed in with sex education and like thing me bob (sorry forgot your name) said its the modern world.

Re: Did anyone get less computer lessons when the went to high school?
This is a few years back now, but the computer lessons mainly consisted of Office and Desktop Publishers!?!
Programming was done in Pascal (shudders) and even then it was the basics only.
I only started learning how to program once I reached University level. :thumb:

Re: Did anyone get less computer lessons when the went to high school?
I want to be a computer and software engineer but we learn nothing about that at school - i learned all of what i know about that at home. ;)
-
Re: Did anyone get less computer lessons when the went to high school?
Got tons at mine... don't know how many, but my skills are to great for them.
-
Re: Did anyone get less computer lessons when the went to high school?
I had none until I went into a computing course at college. That summer I actually got a PC and thats my real first experiance with a PC system (I had an atari but nothing to it really) :)

Re: Did anyone get fewer computer lessons when they went to high school?
8 hours, you were lucky!
When I were young we didn't have computers at all...we had 150 of us in a class..well, I say class, it were more of a windswept field overlooking a toxic waste dump, but it were a class to us like...and we had to wander round pretending to be electrons in a doped silicon wafer. That were as near to a computer class as we had.
And you try telling that to the youth of today..they won't believe you.

Re: Did anyone get less computer lessons when the went to high school?
The best thing about my computer lessons (on the old archimedes machines) was that I could totally ignore the teacher for 55 minutes and when he angrily walked over (to sarcastically make an example of my for not listening) at the end of the lesson he say something like "So Mr Smartarse, did you get all that, mybe you can show us all how its done."
I'd say "Sure", and dead casually accomplish the whole lesson's worth of stuff in about 10 seconds. He ignored me for the rest of term. It sucked though because everyone was forced to write lame "traffic lights" simulators and crap like that. It wasn't even in a real programming language. No challenge at all, no stimulation.

Re: Did anyone get less computer lessons when the went to high school?
I think Apple must have given one hell of a deal to my old grade school. Seemed like every computer was an apple with a monochrome monitor. I still remember a game we had from back then, was called oregon trail.

Why on earth would someone want to actually study computers in school?
-
Re: Did anyone get less computer lessons when the went to high school?
At the risk of sounding old...
These days they need to learn them. When we started education PC's didnt really exist (if at all) therefore they were never seen as important. Now however they are everywhere. Computers have only really taken off in the past 20 years and probably 15 years or less for most people :)
-
Re: Did anyone get less computer lessons when the went to high school?
Isit something in Ireland that you dont learn computers becuase Merrion didnt either! :ehh:
-
Re: Did anyone get less computer lessons when the went to high school?
True - but my lack of education was provided by the UK two-tier education system.

Dude, I was in HS when you were born. WE had computers, where did you go to school? Actually, I think you have answered that. Or are you lying about your age?

Re: Did anyone get less computer lessons when the went to high school?
My computer class consisted of learning how to:
Use WORD
Use EXCEL
Use PRESENTATIONS - Which I basically owned with my all-mighty ingenouity (*gasp*, I can make things fade out if I put more background again!?) (I
didn't know VBA yet, which would've really kicked ass, but oh well)
Use Some weird kind of movie program (no, not presentations), which I promptly
became more proficient at than the teacher (hey, look, there's a place where
you can write code in...)
Use ... ummm... no that's it. I wrote a really bad mario game in grade 10 and don't want to mention it. ... Damn.
