You can probably contact AOL and let them take care of it. I don't know if IM's connect p2p, and think that you would get an AOL address, anyways.
For 2K/XP/2K3:
If you open the command prompt (type cmd and hit enter in the run menu)
then type netstat -a
it will show all active connections.... (port/ip or host)
there is no way you can tell though, because you are just connected to the AIM server and you are not directly connected to the person who sent you the IM message. So the only way to find out their ip is through contacting AOL, and I think the only way they would provide you with any answer is if you actually take legal action :) sounds like trouble haha, companies dont disclose info easily
How about trying a program called ethereal, it monitors packets sent to and from your computer and also shows the IP's. Plus its completely free which equals good :thumb:
try www.ethereal.com
that wouldn't help unless you tricked them into sending you a file (this may work because in the msn protocol when somebody sends you a file, directly, they you their ip address and you connect to them. im not sure how the aim protocol works -- never looked into it -- but if you can get them to establish a direct connection, netstat -a is all u need)
isnt the message sent as a packet?

also (although you've probably tried this) but there is a warn button in the IM window for situations like this
