When you go to the control panel and click on network, you can see your computer friendly name. When using the Winsock control, you can supply the friendly name instead of the IP in the "RemoteHost" property. Does this work over the internet (what if two computers have the same friendly name)?
What do you mean by computer friendly name? Workgroup name?
Oh, actually it is just called "computer name"... it is above the textbox above WorkGroup name in the 'Identification' tab of Network in the Control Panel.
To get back to your question: NO
You can use the computername only in a LAN situation, not over the internet.
Over the internet you can use an IP address, or a domainname.
Both are unique.

So, I have to get the IP of the server in order for the client to submit data.
Now, something else. I have a chat program that works with the UDP protocol between 2 pcs. How can the two programs figure out the IP addresses of each other so that one can connect to the other? (Connection over the internet)...
