Does anyone compress their whole hd?
If you mean format it as NTFS, then, YES, I do.
I mean compress not format. You hd does need to be NTFS in order to use NTFS compression though.
I was just wondering if anyone has compressed their whole hd and what was the average time it took to complete.
Nope. Never use it.
I wouldn't if i were you. The problem with compressing an entire drive is that Windows has to decompress and recompress EVERY file as it is accessed. This includes system files. In otherwords, it will slow your computer down considerably and the space gains will not be worth the performance losses. Unless it's used for just storage that isn't accessed all the time, then it's OK.
Thanks for the heads up ideas man. :thumb: Yeah i just read that somewhere. Wouldn't be worth the performance hit. I wasn't planning on doing it anyway. I should have more than enough hd space. :D I also read that NTFS compression does a good job at compressing image files but some files like .pdf it dosen't.Quote:

It's good for archival purposes and non-frequently used files but yeah, don't use it on files you use day-in and day-out
