Hi,
Does anyone have any information on how I might host my own website. Specificaly getting a DNS record to point to my IP address.
I am using XP professional and IIS 5.0. I have my website set up but I want to have the address http://www.xxx.com to go to my website instead of http://212.xxx.xxx.xxx.
I have a static IP address.

Depending on who you bought the domain name from, you might have direct access to the DNS informaiton. I own a domain (through 123reg) that I host at home. Also be sure that your ISP doesn't block port 80 :)
First of all you should use Windows 2000 Server or Windows 2003 Server becuase XP only allows to have 10 connections to IIS at a time and so your website will give no response if more than 10 connection are made.
Keep in mind that 10 connection doesn't mean 10 ppl browsing at a time. Some could be downloading something from your site and using a software Flashget for example and Flashget can split file in a number you specify and opens that many connection to the site and downloads a file.
I own a domain and the company allows me to enter the name servers information myself so in your case if your domain registrar allows you to do so then you can have your name server and then you can point your domain to your name server and to your home computer.
Also like Tom said many internet contracts clearly states that you can not host a web site becuase those contracts are meant to be for home use. Just make sure that you don't get into any legal trouble (not that I care myself though :D but if you are planing to do this on a large scale then you need to be careful)

Anyway attached is online domani management provided by my domain registrar and the only info I need to fill in is where I have drawn BLUE circles.

You arent really planning on hosting your site from a windows box right?
if you want it just to show friend then there are loads or programs that will let you map a domain name to you computer staic or not, check out search for "dynamic dns" on google and that should get you started.Quote:

i use http://www.dyndns.org/ for getting my files from home at college

Take your trolling questions elseware, where people actually have the time to read dribble like this.
He makes a valid point. If you don't want to shell out for Windows server then I would either recommend a Linux box or downloading Apache. Both of which are viable safe solutions.
