Belkin 802.11g wireless network cards...having problems.

I have a number of these network cards.
To get them to work on my XP machine I had to install SP2 1st, even though I had installed the drivers, it simply refused to connect...no errors or anything, just kept saying there were connections available.
Once SP2 was installed it worked fine.

I have told by someone that this problem was actually fixed in SP1, but I just installed SP2 straight away.

Anyways, I have installed some more of the wireless network cards. One on a 98 machine, and another on a 2000 Server machine.

I am now experiencing the same problem as I had with XP, but this time there are no SP's to download to fix the problem.

I have downloaded the lastest driver install package from Belkin, but still nothing :(

I don't think W2K supports Wireless. Could be the same for 98, but it would seem unlikely.

The drivers installed ok...didn't whinge about the OS.

They MUST be supported...that would mean everyone would be forced to upgrade to XP!!!

Supported OS are:

98 SE, ME, 2000 and XP.

But it DIDN'T work on XP until I has SP2 on it.

I have 98 and 2000 Server, so I would assume that it would work on them...or am I gravely mistaken???!!!

maybe they released a patch for it? I got rid of a Compaq Wireless card because W2K wasn't supported at the time.

Are the cards enabled?

Do the machines detect the wireless network?

If they do, can you turn off authentication to connect?

Do you have their software and drivers? I had software to generate a key when I did it last year. When I moved to XP, I just copied the key into the card's property screen, and it worked.

the utilities pick up ALL wireless networks in range.
i can select any network.
but instead os saying connected it says....NOTHING, no errors, nowt.

i downloaded latest drivers and software from belkin...still nowt.

XP did the same...until I added SP2.

If there is any encryption on the router, like WEP, then turn it off. You need to input a key pair in the router and the card in order to connect. You should be able to connect with no encryption.
Also, unplug the LAN connection, so you don't have multiple IP addresses.
If the utilities see a network, and you can't connect, it is probably because it is encrypted.

I know the encryption key for my own network :D

And, no, it still doesn't work if I turn encyption off. I tried that when I had the problem with XP before I installed SP2.

I didn't read everything because I didn't have time, but if you are using the WLAN (basically the GUI to getting you connected supplied by the vendor) then try setting XP to "allow windows to control my wireless connections" or whatever.

is DHCP turned on at the router?
do you see the card in network connections? is it enabled?

pops up on XP...but ONLY when you have installed SP2.

dglienna, yup, yup, yup and yup. My network is setup 100% correctly, and I have numerous PC's currently running on it without a problem...but these required XP and SP2 before the wireless would work.

It seems that no other OS supports wireless!!!

I think that I had it running with ME, but can't be sure. It was an old laptop.

I just ran NETCHECK on my HP laptop without having a linksys card. It found no problems. It also suggests that the Linksys cards will work with 95 and up. Try it for yourself.

I've read that mfg's are making it easier to configure wireless equipment, and are including tools to do it. This one appears to be online. (I had to download the .ocx to run it on XP)

I am being forced to put XP on all my machines :(

Hmmm...that link has only very basic info about networks. Think I am beyond that.
I have been setting up PDC networks for the last year, and have not had any problems.
I will take a 2nd look at that link to see if I missed anything.

Not an option when I have just bought 6 wireless network cards and 2 wireless adsl modem firewall routers.

Dunno about setting up networks (barely managed to get one xp pro to talk to another and no internet sharing neither :( ) but I did get Micro Mart a couple of weeks back that had a section on how to configure the router for Adsl wireless connection and then get it to read (up to) four wireless card. Newsagents may still have a back copy?? Worth a browse if they do...

Somehow though I get the feeling you know all this already and its just windoze testing your patience.

There have been some pretty nasty problems with Belkin routers over the past few months.

This model (802.11g with turbo support) appears to be the worst affected.

There is a firmware upgrade available from Belkin, but you must hard reset the router before trying (IE hold reset button for 10 seconds)
