Arafat had wanted to, "attain peace" in the region in his lifetime. He wanted to be remembered in history by that, but obviously, no chance left for him. Of course, now that he's dead, all media websites will be paying tribute by only speaking good of him.
Did Arafat accomplish anything for Palestine, or did he throw them further into a spiralling downfall? Where's Palestine headed now?

Arafat, like Mandela was on a journey. It's unfortunate that Arafat never finished his.
They both started out as terrorists (aka freedom fighters) Arafat's journey went a very long way which included winning the Nobel Peace Prize.
He couldn't finish it off, though. I suspect partly through his own weaknesses (did he ever wear a suit? or were faitgues in fashion?) and I suspect partly through pro-semitic protaganists elsewhere in the world.
I imagine he never would've got there either.
He brought Palestine to the worlds attention and he got the different groups to unite behind him. However he never groomed a successor and this is going to cause major problems. There is bound to be a power struggle to fill the vacum.Quote:

Arafat was nothing, but a terrorist..no different than Bin Laden. Not only did he not help the Palestinians (He turned down Israel's offer for a Palestinian state), but with his encourage and financing of suicide bombings nearly daily in Isreal he pretty much shut the door to the path of the Palestinians ever getting their own state.
The world is better off without this guy.
BTW, the Palestinians have NEVER had their own state, they have always been a smaller part of a bigger country. It's just that after all those Arab bastards got their asses kicked when they tried to take over Israel that Israel took that land. And they took it for self defense, and rightly so.
I think Israel has bent over backwards trying to accommodate these psychotic maniacs. But Palestinians don't want peace. They don't want their own state. They want every last Israeli dead and they won't rest until that happens.
Yah, and it's funny how you cry over the Palestinian children who have died, but no mention at all of the Israeli women and children that are innocently killed daily on buses or pizza parlors etc.. Hell most of the Palestinian kids that are killed are little terrorsists anyway. They are the ones carying around AK-47's and straping bombs to themselves and blowing up innocent people.

I never met Mr. Arafat, but good riddance. I once roomed with one of his former bodyguards, though. Really good guy. So are all the Palestinians I know. Just another case of good people with turd-sack leadership.
Well I agree with some of what Arc has said, however Israel is no innocent piece in this chess game. If you simply research palestinians are bombed and killed innocently just as much as israelis! Israel has had it bad throughout the years and will always have it bad, but anyone around them that has problems is going to have it bad as well.
Either way i am not directly affected so i don't care who is the leader of palestine, or israel for that matter.
I should post my Israel & Palestine research paper i had to do for mid terms last year. had some good stuff in it ;)

I've been to Israel and Palestine. All the people there are good. The only thing out of the ordinary that I saw was the inherent mistrust (call it fear actually) that they had of each other. And personally, it was more like they were supposed to harbor these feelings for each other.
Arafat did many good things, but he had some serious flaws as a leader. His inability to even consider succession meant that to much control was in his hands. I feel that peace would never be possible under him. It might not be possible under anyone else, but he was tried and failed.
When you get a guy who has lived that long, in such tough conditions, does it really matter how he died? The death rate is still one per person, and he was certainly fairly old for his lifestyle. Some will say poison, but the fact is that there is probably no need for such a rationale.

I just finished a book on the crusades. That place has never known peace throughout recorded history. Israel will fall, it's just a matter of time. Then another will come along, and they too shall pass away in time.
