Can anyone give me a few pointers or preferably some URLs I can take a look at.

Active Directory is Microsoft's attempt to beat Novell's Novell Directory Servies which was released about 6 or 7 years ago. But of course, Novell being who they are did absolutely no advertising and have been walked all over.
Active Directory is great though. Get the admin password for a Windows 2000 or 2003 server and have a fiddle in Administrative Tools with the Active Directory stuff. Also have a look at exchange.
What does your application have to do? There's an awful lot in AD...
