pcanywhere was connecting fine, now no

Hey all.

as mentioned,

installed Pcanywhere and it ran fine for a few days (hosting at home, remotely from my office)

but for the past 3 days, I get a couldn't establish connection error when I try to connect. The first day I expected to come home and find my pc either restarted or not online, but it was up and running, pcanywhere open, status waiting....

very odd. I didn't change anything either. I have XP service pack 2 and i have the firewall set to except all of pcanywhere's apps. No changes made there either. No system messages in admin on my home PC either. As though it truly couldn't find my pc.

I have an ADSL connection at home. Maybe my IP address is not static or something?

What do you think (assuming you know PCAnywhere)?

Try pinging the computers from both locations to ensure they can see each other.

Try asking the network admins at your office if they blocked off the ports you were using.

try to connect thru a network connection at home to troubleshoot. do you have a router?

my ipaddress did change. is it because of adsl?

when i do ipconfig at home i get 2 results:

ethernet one: xxx.xxx.......


and ppp one xxx...xx....

and they are both different from the ones I had last week when i checked. I have a bandwidth and ADSl connection to internet. I currently use the ADSL (faster for some reason).

So can't i get a static address. I'm thinking everytime I have to reconnect to internet, i'll have a new address to remember.

any thoughts?

by the way, when i changed the address at office, connected no prob.

i'd have to say that the best way would be to have the computer send an email to work once a day or something like that, and you could get the ip address from that.
you could probably pay a little more for a static ip address at home, but don't know if it is worth it.

Or signup for a dynamic DNS with a service like DynDNS, then all you really need to remember is the DNS name. You simply install a little program on your computer and it will update your DNS record on their DNS server when your IP changes, use the DNS name to connect to your computer and you should have no problems.
