What do you think the best advice for someone (my girlfriend) who is homesick? She just moved in to her new apartment for college, 3 hours away from home.

I don't think I've ever been homesick, but I'd imagine calling home would help. Also taking her mind off it, maybe take her bowling, or some other social thing with plenty of people so she's busy with other things.
If you'll be there with her, then that will also help.
Three hours??? Just three hours away? I've been living in a different country from home since I was 15 and haven't even met my family in millions of years (I will, though... in a few months). Tell her to go enjoy her freedom and independence. She can't be so dependent on others, she'll have to get accustomed to this eventually, especially when she moves in with you. ;)

mendhak, 3 hours might be too much for some people. I've also been living in a different country since I was 13 (except for holidays), but for others college/university is the first time away from home.
I'm sure people on Big Brother are homesick at the start, which cracks me every time (not that I watch that ****e :rolleyes: ).
It's not so much the distance as the fact that she's never been away for more than a weekend. (not counting being 5 minutes away at a friends)Quote:

Personally, I haven't called my mother since I came to university.. except that one time about the student loan.
It's hard to spend time with her because she lives a good half hour away (on BUSES, so specific half hours) and we both have classes. Also, being new to the city by about two days, she has no new friends yet (old one or two around, and classes tomorrow, so that should be fixed up soon)
Not to say I wouldn't go see her if she needed me there. Hell, I'd hitchhike to do it.

Keep an eye on her ;)
Call her regularly. Initially, once every day, in the evenings. Later, you can make it once every two or three days.
And make it a point to visit every weekend.

Everyone feels homesick if they are unhappy. She is just unhappy because she hasnt got much to do at the moment. Trust me it will pass when college starts and she gets lots of boozing friends :afrog:
