Is there a way to keep my internet connection enabled while my computer is on standby? I'm using a cable modem, but I'm connected to it via router. Thanks for your help.

Are you just trying to retain your ip address?
If so look for a Maximum Idle Time setting in your router and set it to 0.
Well, I'm not sure what retaining it would do. I want my computer to be able to download a file from the internet, or through aim, for example, while the computer is on standby. Is this completely irrational or is there a way to do it?Quote:

Standby - While on standby, your entire computer switches to a low-power state where devices, such as the monitor and hard disks, turn off and your computer uses less power. When you want to use the computer again, it comes out of standby quickly, and your desktop is restored exactly as you left it. Standby is particularly useful for conserving battery power in portable computers. Because Standby does not save your desktop state to disk, a power failure while on Standby can cause you to lose unsaved information.
I am not entriely sure if windows will allow appilcations to function in standby mode but to disable ur network adapter from turning off ----->
In Device Manager, Select your network card
Right Click --> Properties
Power Management Tab ---> Uncheck boxes .....
(based on winxp)
Try it.
my laptop goes to standby when i shut the cover. the screen goes off, but internet music keeps playing, or DVD's keep playing. I'd bet that file transfers continue also, although I haven't tried it. :cool:
and hibernate when I hit the power button
