They're what're called OEM manufacturers.
They get the 'blue print' for the model, but many of the choices as to the brands of hardware used to build the card vary within the same company, and vary much more from company to company.
Memory manufacturers may use their own memory, for instance. Which might be appealing to someone who likes that company. Some motherboard manufacturers also produce video cards. Like the A-Bit Siluro series.
Some put better features in them than others, or have higher quality outputs to things such as TVs.
OK. Particularly, I am looking at different Radeon 9600XTs. Do you have any suggestions which company I should go with?
Lets see...
Siluro(ABIT), Built By ATI, Gainward, LeadTek, Sapphire.
Look for reviews and benchmarks, etc.
If you'd like a built by ATI, and it's 'on sale' http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...102-331&depa=0
I have a Sapphire, and I use the Built By ATI drivers, for my Radeon 9000 Pro 128 MB -it works great. Here's a 256 MB version opf the 9600 XT from Sapphire. It's 6 dollars cheaper than the 128 MB version above. $6 cheaper and 128 MB of more memory works out good. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...102-335&depa=0
