I am not sure if GDI is on it's way out...but if I should guess, I would say now. DX requres HW acceleration, and needs DX installed. I havn't used GDI, but I guess that it's doesn't need that, so it will always be a need for GDI, at least untill Longhorn is out, then I am not sure anymore...
My requirements make for a little more fun as well; the graphics stuff I will be doing will be 2d/3d and run from a terminal server
aaagghhhhh
(takes a breath)
aaaaaaaaaaaaaagggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh
Ad long as the PCs have the HW for it, DX will always be faster. But also a bit harder to code. It is for work, or for fun?
For work - they won't let me do it in assembler . . .
This might be a good thign to check out, Its a post I made a week or to ago about what Longhorn will use instead of GDI and GDI+. Its a markup kinda thing. The thread didn't get any replies but the link I put in the post is a good read:

I read about that. Is there anyway a normal (ie non-beta) developer can get a preview of this?
Not sure, I thought I had seen a link to download a SDK somewhere but signing up for a BETA tester is easy isn't it (if you find a link pass it on cos I've never got roudn to signing up as a BETA yet ;)).
There will be a new DX version for Longhorn too...cacn read about it in the FAQ...but if you are thinking about the app you are going to develope now, why are you thinking that many years forward....
