Nividia GeForce 4 MX 440

Nividia GeForce 4 MX 440 is my gfx card..

When playing games or sometimes just the desktop little green dots appear it looks like the graphics are messed up and i dont know whats up with it? anyone take a guess to whast wrong>?

Hmm...Im thinking you are running DX9 and it aint gonna work...Try typing in "dxdiag"[enter] with out the quotes and it will show you the version you are running.

i'm running direct x 9.b... what cud the problem

Possibly.........Go back to using DX8.1 and see what happens

All DirectX versions are backwards compatable - if your card works with DX8 (which it should) then it'll work with DX9.

Have you tried checking your connections between your motherboard/graphics card and your graphics card/monitor?

It does, what are you talking about? It's only a DX7 or 8 card anyway.

How do i uninstall direct x 9? i got a copy of 8.1 with my drivers disk but how to uninstall 9 :confused:

Just install it over the top of it. It isn't supposed to be uninstalled.

I never said install DX 8.1, i misread your post and thought you had trouble installing 9. What i ment was that the card is a DX 7 or 8 card which means it can only use the DX 7 or 8 instructions. Having DX9 installed just means that any card you put in can use all the instructions contained with the previous versions plus the new ones.

so to my problem.. how can i fix it?

Is this actually a PNY Verto card ? Have you tried what SLH suggested...Reseat the card and make sure when you screw in the retaining screw that the card does not bind and lift up a tad. Uninstall it software, Card & drivers, then reinstall it all over again.

Just currious did you get the card with the good heatsink and fan on board or just the heatsink?

Graphics problems like you are describing is usually a result of incorrect overclocking or pushing your card too far. Also, if you have recently flashed the card, make sure you flashed it with the correct image (which comes from the manufacturer, not Nvidia)

You may not have knowingly OC'd the card, but check your bios settings before you do anything else... just incase. Just reset to defaults then try...

I was thinking the same as Vision IT....those artifacts are typically if the core clock is tuned to much. If I am not wrong the card you have is just left overs from the mobile version that NVIDA made some time ago. So something might have gone wrong there...has it been like this all the time, or did it happen resently....

:confused: I always have the latest version of DX and have never had the latest card that supports all the extra features and i've never had any trouble whatsoever (I've got a Geforce3 right now and my sister's got a geforce4 MX).

It should not be a problem at all. DX is just a COM interface between your GPU and the code calling your GPU. It is backward compatible through COM, and it should not be a problem to use DX9b (summer release) with a DX7 or DX8 card. Not all functions can be emulated. And not all apps/games suport REF, but it should still work on apps/games that use DX8 or DX7 calls. The same with VS and PS calls that are supported by your card.

Thats what M$ thought too. They even put it up on the M$ Update site as a "critical update" Durring this time I was getting quite a few boxes coming through my shop, the customers stated that the last thing they did before it crashed was go to the M$ update site and download the latest "critical updates. M$ has since taken DX9 off of the "critical" list because it was crashing computers.

Hey, if it works for you...great. If it doesn't believe me it is worth rolling back to DX8 then re-installing the card drivers.

I would die if I couldn't program in DX9...:D
