Post Count

Hi,
Just a suggestion for how the post count should work!

Firstly: Posting in the Forum Feedback should not increase your count (Especially as of late when it has been on a par with the chit-chat forum!)

Secondly: You shouldn't get a count increase when you start a new thread as it is you that is asking the question and since post counts can make you a 'Guru' , it seems strange to be able to accomplish this feat just by asking questions!!! (Surely to be a Guru you would need to ANSWER that many questions ;) ).

Just my thoughts anyway!!

Very good...I see too many posts that post an answer to a question as "geez, I don't know how to do this but someone must" or "I'll check into that" or " Hmmmmmmmmmmm"

Post Counts are not anything to be excited about...then of course, there are the 20 million questions!

I agree, I may lose around 20 posts, but I think the posts here(forum feedback) shouldnt count, most of them are useless, and I dont like pointing my finger, but <points finger> V(ery) Basic started most of the chit-chaty posts here.

I think the idea about starting threads not-counting is a good idea, because some people have asked so many questions that they become lively or hyperactive members without answering anything......

I only go off topic in the chit-chat forum,
and thats what its for, to go off-topic(the topic being Visual Basic)....

and by the way, chit-chat posts dont count anymore...

and I havent been posting too many replies lately because I do my best work at night, and I havent been able to stay up as late because school starts in a week...

Has anyone else noticed that the questions are getting tricker around here. Oops....should put this in chit chat...sorry John.hehehehehehehehe

Ive seen dennis help a lot of people, and yes, they are getting harder. Whatever happened to the questions like, "how do I make a message box appear?"

I think it's highly unlikely that 200 of dennis's posts actually answered questions, let alone all 1200 of them.

Also, dennisthe concept of Forum Feedback is that people complain about the forum. That's what I do. I actually complain about the Management (aka John) and his partying habit.

You, however, just post uselessly.

And dennis if you took away all your questions I'm pretty sure we'd be more or less equal.

I agree with the main gist of this thread, I definatley think posts on the forum feedback shouldn't count, I think it would be far to difficult to implement the other Ideas S@NSISS suggested, although they were good in theory. (there were all sorts of elaborate suggestions like this for the new rating system, but keeping things simple is always a good Idea (you're computer programmers, you should know that)

I havn't been very active in th real forum for a bit because I've been very busy coding away, and quite frankly the last thing I want to do in my free time is more VB, so I can't comment on what dennis is being accused of, but certainly if a person was doing that then it's kinda unfair.


But I would quite like to know why everyone getts so stressed about post counts, at the end of the day it only shows how much of a geek you are, and now people are saying, "Hey, look at him, he's not a proper geek but he's still got lots of geek points because he's getting them for non geekish things, he's cheapening what it is to be a geek" the main reason that posts on the chit chat forum aren't counted any more is that me Ked and Megatron had a post race on it, which was just a bit of fun, it never even entered our heads that people actually cared about post counts. Now people are taking it as a personal insult whenever anyone says something off topic. Chill out people, there are important things outside the internet as well.

I don't think anybody is getting stressed about post counts except for maybe people like D*m*v*. I just find it annoying when I come to work in the morning and have about 10 e-mails telling me such and such has replied to a thread and when I look at them, expecting to see some helpful answer, all I see is crap that is there for nothing other than upping their personal post-count.(above mentioned always does this and then nominates himself for Guru! Idiot!)

I'm sorry but I can't agree with you on that one. People like Megatron and Kedaman (even yourself) have particularly high post counts. VB experts yes, geeks definately not :)

I turned my email replies thingy off a long time ago, I did get flooded by emails saying post had been answered long after I posted them (especially If I gave a helpful answer and then the thread got turned into a discussion about something completley irrelevent. I can definatley see how that is a serious problem.

The attitude I was talking about is the feeling of resentment to those who are posting irrelevently, Zej has been particularaly vocal on this subject recently, and while it is a fair point I think it's being taken a little too seriously, it's only a website after all.


I'm very sorry if I offended any super posters with my geeks comment, it was meant in a lighthearted way, I was just trying to show the situation form a different perspective to point out how silly the whole upping post count/complaining about it argument is. If the top thing on your list of things to be proud about is your high post count here then I'd say you fitted the geek mould pretty well, most of the really high posters don't care about it.

First off, no offence taken Sam, heheh, i would probably fit into the geek category too...

The suggestion, about not counting posts for this forum, gets my vote, i've seen it's oftenly used like chitchat, most threads have tons of posts which turn out to be totally irrelevant. (the problem could be that you don't lock a forum feedback thread because John doesn't reply)

I'm not sure whether the second suggestion could be accomplished, could be a bit harder to do especially as there are many post already counted, and when you start counting deleted posts everything gets complicated...

Totally agreeing with Sam, we shoudn't be discussing this at all, maybe Zej cares about post counts, but does that mean that everyone has to follow strict rules for posting, there was a time when I, sam, and meg posted like crazy and we thought postcounting was fun, but now I think it's only childish, maybe we should turn it off (from be shown public) and then let John decide whenever someone can be promoted to Guru, by looking at this private postcounting.

Post counts just indicate that People are using the site, well using every forum except chit chat l guess. Now having done some serious research into counts and postings over the weekend l have come up with the following disturbing facts.

Batman Total useful counts 11500.

Sam Total useful counts 25000, (and 543 as Robin).

kedman Total useful counts 5.3 million, oops l mean 5.

Very Basic Total useful counts 1509, (if we agree on the humour guru title.

Dennis Total useful counts 985, or 1203 if you include gun hints.

Myself Total useful counts -876, (not sure how l did it, but am ready for all accolades).

Serge Lost count at about 50 million or so.

Megatron The boy must be Bill Gates, enough said.

John and Mrs Le Pont They are slipping up here, and need to answer some threads.

Hope that brings some serious debate back to this forum
