Restore My Documents

My computer froze and when I re-booted, my desktop had been reset to default settings and I lost the My Documents folder. The rest of my c: drive (and other drives) were intact.

When I check the used space on c: drive, there is no more free space than there was before.

I have searched for files and folders in My Documents but can't find them.

If I go to "Disc Clean Up", it says that there is 2GB in "old chkdsk files". The explanation underneath is that these are files that were recovered when "chkdsk" checks your hard drive and saves them in the root directory.

I can't locate these files. There is no "view files" button in disc clean up and I can't find them in the root. I have made sure hidden files are shown.

Can I restore these files? Is there a repair utility that I can run?

I am running XP Pro.

It appears that 4 folders have been created in the c: root directory called

FOUND.000
FOUND.001
FOUND.002
FOUND.003

containing loads of files with the extension chk.

How can these files be restored?

Change the extentions and put the files back where they were before. It sounds like you have a bigger problem though.

There are too many files. Each chk file is an 8KB fragment. I found a utility that restores the files at

but it doesn't restore their original name and directory. It just just dumps them all into a directory and calls them File1234.doc etc which is virtually useless.

Does anyone know of a more advanced chk file recovery program that restores the file name and directory?
