Mandrake 10 + Laptop

I've been using Mandrake Linux for quite a while now, I love it and all my computers have it installed now -- except my laptop. Which brings me to my question -- is it possible to install Mandrake 10 on a laptop? I've searched around a few linux sits, and I can't seem to find anything about my particular model of Laptop pertaning to Linux.

Has anyone here had any experience with this? There are quite a few features that require extra drivers (ie: quicklaunch buttons, modem, wireless card, touchpad, etc).

Yes you can install it on a laptop. Laptops are the exact same as destops.

They all have:
CPU
RAM
Hard drives
Motherboards
Video cards
etc...

You should have no problem running Mandrake on that machine.

My question was more or less directed towards the special features of Laptops. For instance, my laptop has seperate drivers for the touchpad. I would assume that those drivers would only work under Windows, so if I install linux I won't be able to use my touchpad. Same thing goes for my network card, quicklaunch buttons, etc.

Linux is normally packaged with generic drivers for everything. My friend has used knoppix on this laptop and his touch pad worked fine...so did his ethernet. Mandrake will have the drivers you need.

Your quicklaunch buttons probably won't work.

And depending on the drivers you need, you'll probably have to do some searching so you can find some uncertified drivers that you can hope work. :rolleyes:

I got bored with my Mandrake Linux... downloaded it, burnt it on 3 CD's... installed it... played with it... went to go play a video game... shut off my Mandrake, turned on my XP..

Yes , it will work with no problems . I installed Mandrake and Knoppix on my laptop and had no problems(well , I screwed my partitions :() .

You shoudldn't have any problems getting Mandrake to work for you. If you do a little bit of googling, you should be able to find info on manually configuring hotkeys in Linux, I've managed to do it for my Microsoft Internet Keyboard Pro.

Anyone have any luck running Mandrake Linux 9+> on a Microsoft Virtual PC 2004?

For some reason the XDE server doesn't start up.. and all I'm left with is textual commands.

Makes little sense since I get the pretty Mandrake screens on bootup, but it never starts up XDE.. KDE..Gnome.

Ok, When you get to the text prompt type "startx" I see a small problem with VirtualPC and Linux. You really cant configure your GUI due to the fact that there is no where to store the settings. At least that is what I think. I really havent messed with Virtual PC.

yea, tried StartX, the XDE just doesn't start up, it gives a fatal error. VC 2004 only allows you to set under half of your physical memory to the virtual OS. I'm guessing because I only have 512mb, the XDE just doesn't have enough to run, because my virtual Mandrake is only allowed to have ~ 128mb.

The settings are stored just like anything else on the virtual harddrive.

VC 2004 is actually very good... you can download the free trial (45 days, no nags or anything) from the MS site.

Well, it wasn't the memory, I upped Mandrake to have 192mb of my physical memory.
