Install a firewall, which you should have anyway... or just goto:
1. Start
2. Run
3. CMD (2000/NT/XP) or command (95/98/Me)
Then type
net stop messenger
Which will disable it. I'de still recommend installing a firewall though... you're are at risk if you don't. There are a few people who will not slag this comment off, and give their opinion on firewalls, just ignore them. ;)
Firewalls are reccommended by evil people such as VisionIT... just look at his post count. He's almost there... :D
LOL
I'm there!!!

If you have Windows XP, turn the firewall on that comes with that. It may seem dumb but it blocks lots of harmful things including that i think. Stay tuned for the new firewall in Windows XP SP2 though, it is very good, a lot more user friendly and more configurable too, bit like ZoneAlarm.
I'm running SP2 'ere... and it's superb! Very quick, very stable and the firewall is good, but still not a patch on shorewall ;)
For the average consumer, it's not available, and it is more than sufficient for everybody to use.
It's made by Microsoft... do you really believe it's sufficient? :p
Nah... it's not that bad really, just not suitable if you want the machine really secure.
Just to be clear though.... service pack 2 is still in beta stage, and I wouldn't advise you install it on your primary machine. ;)
