PC's? [RESOLVED]

Im thinking of selling my Xbox (might keep until i get Halo 2), and was thinking of selling it. And with the money i get from that, i dont know if i should upgrade my sluggish pc, or get another now, and load all my major programs onto it, and let AOL live on its own on the current pc. Problem is i dont want to spend anything major, infact anything between £100 and £200 is too much, but i know ill have to spend so much in order to get a fairly decent comp. Im not bothered about speed and memory, the specifications im considering are roughly areound the area of:


OS: Win98/2000
12Gb HDD is more than enough
128Mb Ram, or possible 256
800Mhz - 1.2Ghz processor, doesnt matter which type
Basic speakers, basic mouse/keyboard.
NO PRINTER, SCANNER OR OTHER DEVICES

Just something basic, anyway does anybody know if i could get such a spec PC for that price range, and if so where?

Amd Athlon XP 2100+(About 1.8ghz)
G-force 4 MMX 440 64 meg AGP 4X Video

See I have this awesome store near me called fryes and they are a PC warehouse. That run CPU + MOBO combos for 40$ ram will run 30$, HD will run about 20$, Video will run 25$ and the rest is about 10$.

So for £23 you could get a motherboard and CPU capable of running XP? :rolleyes:

The windows XP Pro license costs more than that on it's own...

as you arent too fussy about the hardware, you could probably buy that for about £250-300 new (including case/power supply etc).

it would save a lot of money if you bought second-hand instead.

it's a nice small case with power supply & motherboard (inc graphics, sound, & network adapter). You might also consider this one: http://www.aria.co.uk/specials.asp#750

it's a decent equivalent to a "normal" computer, as it uses the same parts, but you are limited to what you can put in to it (in this case: 1 ram stick, 1 hard drive, 1 cd/dvd drive)

you still need to buy a few more bits to get it working (CPU, RAM, Hard drive, and a CD/DVD if u want), but it's a decent start if u want a small system. The price isn't much different to a "normal" equivalent.

If you can find a similar VIA system you'll save more, as the processor (which is relatively slow) is built in.

ok, i dont really know what im doing here, but the computer must already include 1 RAM, 1HDD, 1 Processor, 1 CPU, 1 Motherboard etc. I dont want to have to buy anything seperate and add myself, i can do that later. I just want a basic computer thats ready to format and run. Well this is my current pc's specs:

OS: Win98Se
RAM: 128.0Mb
HD: 12Gb
Processor: 533Mhz Intel Celeron
Sound/Graphics: Onboard i think

And i need something similiar to that specification, with Mouse/Keyboard and preferably 1 CD-ROM

So something in similiarity to that is what im looking for, and i hope to spend no more than £200 squid:)

Is it going to end up cheaper for me to buy seperate parts?

Given that you have on old PC already you won't need a new keyboard/mouse or monitor just buy a 2 port KVM switch instead, I think they are about £24 sterling.

it might be cheaper to buy separate parts, but if you dont wanna build it yourself you'll have to pay somebody to do it.

most systems come without monitors, so you'll need to spend a chunk of money on that too if you want one.. and don't forget any sofware you want (Windows/Office etc), as that could cost you more than the rest put together :eek: (but there are free alternatives such as Linux)

B) I have Win98 and Office 2000 discs here, so thats not a problem.

Is it safe to buy PC's off Ebay?

b) I hope you havent used them already on your existing system, as you are only allowed to use them on one PC, and are breaking the law if you use them on more than one.

c) yes, if you go to the right supplier. I've never used EBay myself, but my sister (who doesnt understand anything technical at all), got a great deal from a good firm (they even paid for repairs to damage that she did).

Used what where? Ive had the same PC and components for the last 5 years, the only thing New is my Motherboard, which is 1 year old:(

I'm pretty sure. It's the same for most software (although VB is one product you can use on mulitple computers, if there is a single person using VB on all of them).

if you're on a budget go second hand, but make sure it's ok (safest is to buy from a shop, so you get a guarantee).

Alternatively do the EBay thing, but make sure the seller is ok, and that you don't go overboard with your bids (make sure you dont pay more than shops or the sites above would charge for a similar deal).

Thanks for the tips, yeah im not on a budget, but im not spending over £200 squid, so i guess that is my limit. I seen a AMD Athlon, 256Mb RAM, 2.4Ghz, CD-RW, DVD Writer, Floppy, Mouse/Keyboard,Modem,Monitor and some software included, running on Win ME i think for only £160 squid! Might try and sell my Xbox first, get some cash then have another look on Ebay. Ebay is safe, i ordered an Xbox controller before, all you have to do is check user ratings:)
