I know this question belongs in 'General PC' but here is more traffic.
Okay, I have two working 10/100 Ethernet card and one CAT 5e Crossover cable. So I run XP's home network wizard. And voilá the computers don't see eachother nor theirselves. What happend?
I've been trying for about an hour and nothing seems to work...
I take it you have an ethenet hub?
Great, now my laptop finds none of the machines and my computer gives an error if I try to find PCs...
BTW, Norton and Firewall have been disabled.
No hubs, just cards. All there is: Two 10/100's and one cable.Quote:

I'm no network guru, but I don't think it will work like that. I think you need a hub.

Have you made one of them the 'host'?
For example, if you're giving them IP addresses of 10.x.x.x, one of them should have 10.0.0.1, and in the other PC, specify the default gateway as 10.0.0.1

both have different names dont they?
On each machine set a static IP address.
Right click on "My Network Places", and go into the properties for TCP/IP for your ethernet adapter.
Set addresses of :
a.b.c.x
a.b.c.y
a.b.c.z
For example :
192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.2, 192.168.1.3 or
10.0.0.1, 10.0.0.2, 10.0.0.3
Then once those IPs are set, try from one machine to ping the other. If this works, then right click on "My Computer", go into computer name, and ensure both machines have different computer names, and that they're both in the same workgroup.

I wouldn't know where to manually set those, I can let Windows XP auto-set them, though.

I now have a laptop (without norton) that sees both computers and a desktop pc that can't acces the network (Error: <workgroupname> is not accessable. (...) List of servers for this workgroup is not accessable at this moment).
A different error I get on both machines, when I try the 'Repare'-option: "Failure, following step was unsuccesful: Renewing IP-adress"
Question: Should both subnetmasks be 255.255.0.0 ?
If some errors are a bit different, it is because I translated them from my Dutch version of windows.
BTW, IP-adresses are:
For PC: 169.254.17.183
For Laptop: 169.254.28.152
The 169.* IP address is what windows sets when it cannot obtain an IP address from a DHCP server. And I told you how to set the IP manually.

I still get this error on my pc: "<workgroupname> is not accessable. (...) List of servers for this workgroup is not accessable at this moment."
My laptop sees both computers but cannot connect to the pc giving me this error: "<computername> is not accessable, you might not have the correct rights for this networksource. (...) Can't find network path"

Open explorer window
type in the directory path box
\\Computername
They both see theirselves, but not eachother.
From what yo uare saying, you have both computers connected to each other with 1 cable. I that is the case, you cant do that. You need a hub

I think you need to read that again. You are probably misreading.
You cant just conenct 2 computers like that with Cat 5
in XP right click my computer on the desktop. Select computer name tab. Check workgroups are exactly the same :) :)
With a CAT5 patch lead no you can't, but you can get a Cross-Over cable which has a pair of wires crossed that you can plug between two computers.Quote:

Try stopping ALL of Norton on all machines and trying again :) :)

simple peer to peer you need -
>network cards (OBVIOUSLY!)
>some cat5 crossover
>ensure tcp/ip networking is installed
>set up a comon workgroup on both machines (check by right click mycomputer>>properties>>network identification>>properties)
>allocate each machine a unique IP - say 10.2.10.10 for one 10.1.10.10 for the other
>enable shared folders on each of the machines
Have you done all of this?
Can you ping the machines from each other?
[edit] i know thing about XP network wizard and how much it does for you, but you can check the above steps against what it HAS maybe done

Yes, many times, almost every possible combination. The laptop works with almost every setting, but the ***** pc doesn't work with any setting.
Try stopping ALL of Norton on all machines and trying again :) :)

IP-what-cha-ma-jiggy? Sorry, can't find anything called IPX. I have: TCP/IP, DNS and WINS
NEWS:
-> It works on my laptop; me and a friend of mine shared quite some files last saturday. So the problemmaker is the PC.
-> As this pc is a 'family/game/internet'-pc a lot of junk is on it. I think I will make a new partition, a clean one and try again, there are too many factors that can be the cause of this problem.
-> I thing the problem is a software-problem, something on the PC is blocking access. The PC keeps telling me it doesn't have the correct 'rights' to enter the network, but when I disconnect the cable the pc tells me it is disconnected. So it does KNOW there's a cable and another pc.
Sorry for the late reply, I'm kind of busy with my midterms and all.
to get rid of Norton you should try the 'msconfig' command that you run from Start -> Run. There you could stop Norton from executing at startup. Try getting a couple of normal (non-crossover ) cables and plug them to a hub, and change the IP address to the same subnet.
Edit: to ping: run the dos prompt Start -> Run -> "command", then type ' ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xx' where the xxx's stand for the other computer's IP address, if you get a response, then you can send packets to the other PC and It must be something wrong with the configuration from windows....

the 10.10.10.10 being the IP of the computer you are trying to find. If you can do that then the potential problem list reduces a bit.
