I've got to send a large number of files from one pc (Win98) to another (WinXP) connected via parallel cable. I tried to use my old version (9) of pcAnywhere and though it runs on 98 it wouldn't install on XP so I need some other utility. I've tried some old DOS tools but none of them would work either.
Could someone recommend any reliable freeware to accomplish the transfer? It would be great if it worked on USB cable.
why dun u do a simple HD transfer =) it would be much faster that way since u have lots of files to transfer :)
I've never laid hands in the inner guts of the computer case, I know it's easy but I just don't want to tamper with it.
I'd rather use a cable and, if necessary, leave it working overnight. All I want is some reliable software that doesn't hang every now and then.
You could always go buy a USB Hub.
From what I understand the software included with them lets you setup a network.
I don't think 98 will be able to connect to the XP machine but the XP machine should be able to connect to the 98 machine.
98 and xp got no problem connecting to each other cos i used them before =)
Since u are saying of parrellel cable. U can always try the build in function of win98. Direct Cable Connection.
Look under add/remove program if u cant find it under accessories.

um... Regarding reliabilty wise i am not that sure. But since its a build in program under windows i think it should have 80%+ reliabilty.
PS: using dos program to transfer file from one pc to the other. Will cause ur file name to have ~ behind if your name is too long.

Well when I tried it, lets just say it would have been quicker to zip all the files, split them up and put them on floppies (at the time they didn't have CD-RW (cheap))Quote:

It just didn't strike me that Win98 has this built-in cable connection feature.
I've tested the direct parallel cable connection between 2 W98 machines without success: the host computer couldn't be found. One of these 2 had such an old version of w98 that didn't even have (or maybe it was disabled?) the capability of sharing folders. Could that be the reason?Quote:

it actually have nothing to do with sharing folder becos sharing folder is on the network level
Direct connection is by using a parrellel cable or so call the printer cable for printer to hook up to computer. But parrellel cable is famale head at each end.
Hook them up on both of your computer. And click on direct cable connection and follow the instruction :)

I've also tried the link from 98 to XP and viceversa without success. Setting 98 as host computer and XP as remote control (guest) prompted me for a username & password but on the 98 side only the password could be defined. I tried the username I log on as in the 98 computer but that availed to nothing either.
At this stage I think I need some kind of tutorial for dummies, you know, with plenty of screenshots and whatnot...
Hm.. well it works fine for me last time...
I think you just have to used other program..
