is it safe to run a computer completly out of a case (no just to test but for a long period of time)?
My dad seems to think so but i wanted to double check before i built it and it ended up buring down the house or something.
thanks,
nate

Yes as long as it isn't on something that can short it.
Try to put it on a hard piece of wood. Don't put it on carpet!
Aleast make sure that it wont catch up the dust from surroundings. Bcos static electricity generated on parts will surely attract it easily.
Cheers.
i had an open system to test parts for a while and it tends to gather a coat of dust.
then one day the cleaning ladying came in with a new duster with static... bam!
there must be a reason for a case...
...
There are many reasons for the outer case and one real good one is for cooling by air flowing through the case by the use of fans. Cool air in hot air out.
But if you just have a lab rat running I think its easier to keep the hood off unless you are doing some bench testing involving time and temp.
I saw this guy once run all of his hardware from a refrigerator, w/o a case!
The refridgerator was the case.......Quote:

You would think that the moisture would fry most of the parts.....Unless....He kept it in the crisper bin :bigyello: :D
Im thinking if it was in there it would fry the mobo. Depends on what kind of stuff you got if you want to leave it all out of the case for cooling reasons.
I've ran computers for weeks without a case, its no big deal. Only if you were to spill something on it or accidently step on it or pull the heatsink off or something...not that I've done any of those things....not at all....:p
I ran a PC for years w/o a case..... just be sure to take a can of air to it once in a while to clean it out....
