I want to have my web host's babies...

I would like to take this oppurtunity to say that I am willing and ready to have the offspring of my webhost, Brinkster.

I pay $18 (cos of VAT) a month for their premium X4 package, which (being the lowest priced paying package) you would suppose would be fairly far down the pecking order for support etc.

Not so!!! I have recently decided to learn to write Java games for mobile phones, and thought it would be cool to distribute them to phones from my website. This requires the webhost to add a couple of MIME types to prevent JAD files being recognized as text. "****" thought I, they'll never agree to that, and I'll have to pay for something outrageously expensive. But I asked them anyway. Lo and Behold, less that 24 hours later, I'm sitting here with a website capable of deploying Java apps to mobile phones, and a great deal of good feeling towards my luvverly hosts :)

I know, but how many web hosts will modify their servers for a lowly (and decidedly budget) customer to add a huge amout of functionality to a package :)

Yeah I suppose.
I use a crowd calling hosting365.ie - primarily because they're Irish.

They're not cheap really, but they'll do nearly any modifications you want to the servers. Perl modules, IIS configuration changes etc. etc.

On the note of webhosting.....the core net gateway crashed at Uni the other day...and by that, I mean that someone pulled it out of the rack by accident, and it landed on the floor some 8 feet below...now THAT'S how to have a service outage :p

I am afraid of my web hosts. Everytime I have an enhancement request or require some service, a large hairy guy named "Doug" shows up at my house with pliers. Then he uses the pliers and twists my nipples until I scream and simultaneously spray blood out of my mouth and apologize for disturbing their slumber. I've heard of a few other client of theirs who have already had their babies. :eek:

I was on-site, and then just never turned msn back on :D
Am on the mobile though with next to no credit, and am just about to go to another on-site.

Just wondering. How do you make games for cell phones. Is is Java Applets or applications, or anything else....I would guess applets...but just want to knwo for sure....I would love to be a programmer for cell phones or pocketPCs or something when I grow up...or more like IF I ever grow up.....

If the MIME types are not correct, they should do it for free because it is their fault!

and that price is too high for that plan

kasracer: I can live with the price because not many comparable plans offer so many ASP components, and the support is amazing. It wan't the MIME types were incorrect, they just weren't there in the first place, as they are not standard types.

NoteMe: You write the games using Java Micro Edition. They are standard classes packaged as JAR file, but written with a particular API set designed for mobile devices. http://wireless.java.sun.com/ has lots of info. I have got a couple of books, and will be putting up loads of content on to my website as I learn stuff. Will post links :)

Will do. But I think that can take some time....right now I am sitting with DX in C++, was a bit diffrent then in VB...:D...

I've just started programming for PocketPC's. There was this thread in the main VB programming questions about it, and it contained a link to MS's eVisual Basic PocketPC Tools (or something like that). Just download the package; it's really easy. It supports VB and VC++. :)
