I picked up a dell magazine and was scanning through it to see if the laptop I wanted was in it. And there it was! But right above all the system specs. was a little green box. Inside that box it read "Desktop Replacement". Now I was wondering. Is that possible?? Can I really rely on that laptop to replace my Desktop unit?

You could, but it can't be very fast unless you don't care about battery life.
Also, heat can be a problem.

Well, you can get an adapter, but then you need to have it plugged in.
You can probably expect upto 2 hours of battery life for a fast laptop(video is also important(for desktop), and a good video card takes more amps).
Also, SO-DIMM RAM is expensive!

7200 RPM drives, more powerful graphics, higher cpu clocks, various internal devices, half a dozen USB ports, firewire, burner, dvd, cd-rom, floppy, etc.
If you put your own system together, a decent laptop could run as much as a top-of-the-line desktop.

No, there are TONS of companies that put decent laptops together. ATi and nVidia just released new laptop cards like a month or so ago that are pretty damn good so it doesn't have to be a desktop card now.Quote:

Isn't alienware for gaming though?? I want a computer that's built for a mixture of things. Something that can handle games,programs, and so on.

Alienware and voodoo have nice laptops but way way over priced. if you are looking for somthing around the same specs but way cheaper go for a sager. www.pctorque.com, www.powernotebooks.com. The 8890's are out and www.pctorque has great forums incase you need help or questions about the system.
I was talking to the guy which runs the pctorque forums and he said that you can go into the bios and run the processor at half speed to save battery power.

There is a good $800 difference for the same component layout.
DELLs are good computers although their prices are only good if you get one of their prearranged package types. If you add memory or customize it they stick it to you. BUT if you can get it at off off then that is a deal hard to beat. DELL is an Intel ***** though so I personally protest them. Not that it really matters since I always build my own.

We have about 5 DELLs at work and have never had a problem with them. They are all workstation/desktop not laptop but none the less. Also you don't always get what you pay for. Some of the cost, a large part, of alienware is just profit and mark up. If there is another maker that sticks the same parts in theirs then its the same thing. I mean alienware doesn't actually make anything, they merely assembly and test the system from other people's parts.

Alienware's suppliers differ from that of Dell's, or Gateway's.
They're into superior quality. Not the generic norm.
I'm not telling anyone to buy an Alienware. But they do offer some of the best hardware out there. And getting that all pre-configured, they aren't any more marked up than what you'd consider a 'good' Dell or Gateway.
I would think the biggest reason for a laptop would be mobility.
Now what's the point of an expensive 'Desktop Replacement' if you don't really need mobility?
And when you are mobile, what are the chances you're going to require Workstation power?
I would definately choose a Sager if I bought a laptop. I don't need a mobile workstation, but they do make decent computers for a fair price.
Dells are Gateways are definately crap though. I would NEVER buy either.
I would never buy an Alienware either. I was merely using their computers as a hardware reference, not price. They have top-of-the-line mobile hardware, you have to give them that. :p
Their desktops could be recreated(do-it-yourself) for roughly $1000 less(last I checked). But that probably wouldn't have many extras, but it'd get the computer booted, and it'd be just as fast.
Dell machines are not generic by the way. Not that there's anything wrong with purchasing generic systems - if you do - then you can buy more generic RAM, as opposed to paying through the nose for Dell specific parts.
And gaming systems will not necessarily give you the overall top performance. They'll give you faster graphics rendering, but you might need to do number crunching instead, or SMP or a host of other things high performance tasks that gaming machines don't do.
In so far as laptops are concerned, I'd buy either Acer or Toshiba.
We shift an awful lot of these laptops every day.
