.net game programming
Hi,
I'm about to start reading and going through ".net game programming with directX 9.0" and was wondering if there was anyone else out there who fancied starting learning. I'm a reasonable programmer but new to graphics and games development. Just thought we could acomplish more and learn more if we did it as a group.
Post if interested!!!

I've got that book too. I'm proberly not as good at VB.NET as you but what do you have in mind?
It would need to be something simple.
-
i was thinking more about just working through the book.
I'm about to start developing tetris. I've read how they do it, but i think i'll try doing it with looking at the book just to see if i can.
-
I was also thinking of tinkering with some game programming in .NET. Maybe I will pick up that book if you guys recommend it. Is there any additional software that you have to purchase to program for DirectX?
-
you need the directx 9.0 SDK but i think that comes with the book or you can download it from the MS website.
The book is good so far. It starts with GDI+, and moves onto directX and 2d games. Not sure exactly how much 3d stuff it covers but i'm not that bothered about that at the mo. From previous attempts at learning directx and c++, 2d stuff will be enough for now!
It'd be cool if you did get the book and we could all work through it together. Seems the game programming part of vbforums.com is dead at the moment!

A lot of the math needed for 3d programming leaves me in witless terror. Good luck!

Im in a C++ online course that is going to teach how to create a 3d game engine. Its not .NET, but we are using Visual Studio .NET for it. First he is going to cover OpenGL, but will move into DirectX.
-
how much does it cost? Have you got a link?

Well the course is free techincaslly, but you cant get to the course unless you are a 3dbuzz.com Member Sponsor, which is $35 a month. But you get more than just the course for that. 3DBuzz.com is a primarily 3d modelling resource and training site. He offers lots of free training videos to teach you about using popular 3d Modelling applications such as Maya, 3d Studio Max, etc. He runs onlice courses that are free to anyone which covers 2 modelling apps, 3d Studio and Houdini. He has the Member Sponsor program which you gets you access to videos he does for special conference and magazines, along with access to 2 courses that free members cant get to. That is the Maya Techinical director course and the C++ course.
About the classes. The classes are go at your own pace. Start when you want, and turn in assignments when you want. There is no rush. Each module in the course starts with a series of videos you watch and listen to that teach you , then you take completion tests for the videos. When you finish all the completion tests, you get a series of assignments you must do and send to the course teachers. Threy grade them and let ou move on to a final Test and a project you must complete. When that is done, you get to move on to the next module which will move into more complicated topics.
Now 35$ is probably not worth it for you unless you are interested in the the other stuff 3dbuzz.com offers for member sponsors, especially as knowing how busy Buzz is(the guy who runs the site) the C++ course is going to always be running behind with new assignments and videos, but if the other sutff also interests you, its worth signing up. In fact he is in Washington right now for the Machinma Festival and hasnt even finsihed putting up the videos and tests for the first module of the C++ course. :(
Either way, there is plenty of free stuff to check out including 3d training videos which you may find useful if you want to do any 3d games. The videos are top notch and Jason(Buzz) is a professional teacher that has written books and teaches at a big 3d art school.
www.3dbuzz.com is the link.

wewp... that's a lot of game for 12 bucks. I may order a copy.
Good luck with the course dude.
-
thanks. You can just download the game for free. No need for the CD, unless you cant download 180 megs. :p
-
that sounds a bit serious for me to be honest Cander, but thanks anyway.
As for the other 2, send me a PM if you wanna link up over messenger or summit to work through the book together.
