This is a moan - when someone has spent considerable time and effort to provide you with a solution to a problem that's been bugging you for days then thanking them is not unreasonable. It doesn't take long and the person who's helped you will know their efforts were worth while and continue to help in the future.
If you are one of the people who do give feedback then ignore this message, it's not intended for you.

I agree entirely! Whilst I dont post that many (Questions or Answers), I always feel better if, after I have helped someone, to get at least a thank you reply just to let me know that my answer(and others too!) has been appreciated. I always reply thanking people if they helped me as I feel it is just courtesy...or are we a minority!!!

Only my opinion, but here it is.
Do you hold the door open out of thoughtfulness and a willingness to help, or for the pat on the back and the sound of the thank you?
Thank you's are nice but definatley not required.
I don't want people to sing my praise, I'm just looking for some feedback. Something that tells me I haven't wasted the last hour or so. It wasn't meant to sound like I'm on some sort of ego trip.
Both really... But saying thank you encourages people to respond again. To take your analogy, if I held the door open for you and you didnt say thanks or acknowledge it, then the next time you can open the door yourself!! It's the same in the forums.. If people don't feel appreciated they don't post, vice versa if they do feel needed they'll help even more. (I think)

For me, it's a matter of just realizing within you that "You are a great help to others". I mean, even without hearing the word "thank you", just helping others makes you feel good at all right? However, just hearing that somebody is thankful for your presence is also a "big thing". But hearing thank you from others is just an added point that will make you more helpful.
Always remember that the important thing is you help others. For me, that's the wonderful thing that anybody can do to somebody. :)
I am very thankful for all of you because you have been a great help to us (beginners).

I think you have to have some occasions where someone completely ignores your help, it makes all the considerate people's gratitude worth something. The thing that really p**ses me off is all the people that deliberately spell things badly and then get really abusive because no-one helps them out (because the helpers think these people are morons!).
Its great to hear from people having success at work as a direct result of my help, it really makes my day!
Another important aspect of saying "Thanks, that helped" is the fact it brings a close to the thread.
Without it, an uninvolved party might not know if the suggestion worked, or if it was just random code that failed to satisfy the initial inquiry...
I agree with Paul...If you can't say thank you, don't ask for help...

Yes...it would be a nice idea, although it's far easier just to post a reply back. I like helping here because in most cases, the feeling of knowing you've helped someone else and that they appreciate that is more important than a post count or 'reputation'. Although they are nice to have :).

Well Paul I see where you are coming from but its the big wide world of the web. I suppose its the anonymity of sights like this which give people the selfishness that a face to face or a phone call wouldn't.
Ive posted answers a few times (not on this sight as i haven't found a question at my low level yet) but on other sights. Once I answered one by chance that had been sitting for two weeks It was the correct answer that i found in a book and all i got back was cheek from someone who i didnt need to try and help so what im trying to say is that if i can help i will its in my nature to help the same as its in people's nature to take and not give.

Well, I think that the top posters (Megatron et al) are very helpful people who deserve a good deal of respect / thanks.
What happened to common courtesy. When some one tries to help, and or does help you it is only common courtesy to say Thanks for you help.
The one word does not hurt, or even draw blood (don't let the gov't. know this)It is not even taxed(as of this writing). But make one mistake and the person you are trying to help will zing you.
I spend quite some time trying to figure out what the heck I'm doing! And usually end up reading and searching a lot of the time for an answer I may not recognize even if I see it for a question I'm not certain about what I'm asking! :::make any sense at all???::: I confused myself! LOL
I asked a question about IsNumeric and the letter 'e' on another thread earlier, and before I knew it, I had NO idea of what was being said!!! Or could even begin to decipher the code which was being tossed back and forth from the Guru's!!! :-) (One day I will though if you can all bear with me that long!)
I, for one, am very thankful to everyone here! Where else can I post a question and receive dang near Instant Feedback from. It's unheard of.
And many of you who have already posted on this thread have helped me in the past. If I have neglected to say so... Then I re-say now... Thanks! :-)

@excelvb: You can create a new thread to ask your question. This one is not even related to that topic. Also search the forums before posting.
When I get help I make every effort to aknowledge that help usually with a thank you. Sometimes I simply forget. If I did forget and then later remember it I will find that thread and thank the person then but still I do forget from time to time. What can I say?
If I have helped someone I do not look for thank you's but rather a return post letting me know that the help I gave really helped that person. If he thanks me, fine, if he doesn't, fine.
What really urks me is when I have given the correct answer to someone; someone else comes in later gives the same correct answer (maybe worded differently or even the same) and the OP thanks the second person. Good grief, was my post invisible?

But yes, gratitude is nice. I don't however expect it(this is the internet where manners almost never exist), though its much appreciated. I try to help because I know what its like to have a nagging problem that you just wish you knew how to solve and its a great feeling, like a heavy burden being lifted, to finally get it solved. I'm always willing to help one reach that euphoria :D
