I have been messing with my autoexec.bat..i made a copy of it just to be safe..but what am asking is? if i deleted it by accedent what do i do to make the copy of autoexe actually start up when windows boots? or will just the name "autoexec" be enough?

Click Restart, click OK, and then press and hold the CTRL key until the Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu appears.
For some machines, you can use F8 instead of CTRL to bring up the Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu.
If you want to skip your Autoexec.bat and Config.sys files and go to the command prompt, enter the number for Safe mode command prompt only, and then press ENTER.
So you could just restart your computer in Safe Mode and make the file. Or in Command mode, just type edit. And then save a file as Autoexec.bat. Basically, all Autoexec.bat is is a file that loads drivers or any files that are to be loaded at Windows Startup.
But if i mess up will all the normal stuff work on my windows still? i mean like sound and normal stuff?

I just reinstalled Win95 and my autoexec.bat and config.sys are pretty much empty. Since I use DOS a good bit, I have some path info in my autoexec.bat and that's pretty much it. Some CD-ROMS, from what I understand need a line in both the Autoexec and config.sys files, but the majority of them, like mine, only use the windows drivers.
You do need a autoexec.bat and Config.sys for a proper boot disk in the event you ever need one. They should have your CD-ROM drivers for DOS along with other utilities.
BTW, what version of Windows are you running?

I assume you are using Windows 9x.
Windows don't really need the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files.
They are still there for backward compatibility with older DOS apps.
Win9x can still use older 16 bit drivers though. They must be loaded in Config.sys or Autoexec.bat before Windows is loaded.
If you use the command prompt or DOS applications in any way you might need to load drivers and environment variables in Config.sys or Autoexec.bat for them to work properly.
To answer your question:
The Autoexec.bat file doesn't need to be place on the boot sector of the drive or something like that. It's only required to be in the root directory of your boot drive.
So you can simply copy your backup file to the root of your C: drive.
