Network on Laptop

How come everytime I take the network wire out of the laptop, and then I put it back in, I have to reboot the machine?

On my desktop PC, it's just a simple matter of putting the wire back in.

Here on the laptop, if the wire comes out, I get that little "info" bubble saying "Network cable is unplugged" or something like that, and I have to reboot the damn thing to get it up again.

Isn't there any way I can avoid this? And if any of you have laptops, do you face the same problem?

I have a Compaq Presario, AMD Athlon XP 1.4 GHz... Windows XP Home Edition.

Have you tried right clicking on the network connection and enabling it again. sometimes xp has problems with its network bios.

Did u assign a static IP to the computer, if not maybe when you unplug the cable is looses the IP, hence you need to restart to get an new IP assigned. If you have a router then if acts as a DHCP server and assigns IP addresses automatically.

Yes, i can disable it and enable it again, but still, it should be automatic, shouldn't it?
What problem does it have with the 'network bios', is there some way to fix it?

Are you plugging into a 100mpbs switch or hub?

Some network cards have a hard time negoatating the speed and duplex settings with the switch or hub (especially a new computer on an older switch). You can try hard coding the speed and duplex setting in the network card options and see if it works.

If you don't want to do Disable and Enable then you can simply right click on the network icon and Repair it.

Well, yes, it is plugging into a hub, perhaps it's a slower one.

Anyways, do this: Right click "Local Area Connection" go to Properties, click on "Configure..." button for the hardware device, and in the new window that comes up, go to the "Advanced" tab.

There is a drop down menu there with the following options:

10 Base Tx
10 Base Tx Full Duplex
10 Base T
10 Base T Full Duplex
Auto Neg 10 HD/FD
Auto Neg 10/100 HD/FD

Currently, it's set to 10 Base T Full Duplex. Should it be something else instead?

Keep it the same.

Does the bubbly popup saying the Network Cabke is plugged in? sry if this was stated already.

Yeah, whenever I remove the wire, a bubble says "Network cable is unplugged" and whenever I plug it back in, and restore the connection manually, the bubble says something like "Network cable plugged in. SPeed 10.0 Mbps"


Why do you ask?

you might have done this but again. Have you checked the CABLE.

Also if you have done everything then uninstall NIC and remove it from MOBO and fit it in a different PCI slot and try it. Give it a go. Wont take more than 10 minutes.

I would try what wrack said and maybe updating to the latest driver

Check the hubs capabilites and set your duplex mode to match

But it's a laptop! :scared:

try another PCMCIA or whatever slot instead.

Do you have another network adapter (different make, if possible) I have never used xp home didnt think it worked good in networks and does not support domains
