...It would be great if it isn't needed, or if its optional...So, I have a project idea:
A program that lets you package all your runtime files into your executable, and then compress it, and encrypt it, so it doesn't take up as much space, its hard for hackers to crack it, and its easy to distribute -- no install programs needed!

I'm not sure you're offering any advantages over the current scheme. You're going to be giving up disc space repeatedly storing the same basic set of dll's _and_ giving up cycles to unencrypt on the fly
What about Fusion. It works quite similarly to what you've wrote.

Fusion IS a good alternative, but it costs money. By that, I don't mean something under $100, but something WAY over that! Just go to http://www.bit-arts.com and look at their prices! Basically, its kinda hard to get that kind of money if your just a small-time shareware developer.
You can be a small-time sherware developer and still get quite good money (I sell my OCX's in my town in the USA and believe me or not I make quite good money as for 18 year old). I'm in the last class in High School and basically my college will be paid by me only (it took me three years to get that kind of money, but it's almost $35000 so it is not that bad - other thing is that I have full four-year scholarship :) )
Just my $0.02 to show that the only thing you have to do is be good at selling your ideas to others. It pays in my case :cool:
If all zillion members wrote a request (or demand) to MS maybe they'd finally include the standard runtime in Windows. What do they have to loose by this? Most computers end up with it on their computers anyway. Why do you think so many programmers flocked to java? Because it was small and easy to distribute. All this talk shouldn't even be neccessary, it's just a slap in the face. It's Microsoft job to make their programming tools work on all machines, not yours! It's time we demand this or get together and write our own damn VB!!!!!!!!!!!

Theres an idea...
Design our own VB that doesn't use runtimes! Cool. But unfortunately, it'll need the VB runtimes to run! lol
But if it was done in C/C++, or some other language, it might be feasible. Also, you will need to write your own compiler, and that'll be extremely hard.
MSVBVM60.DLL comes with Win2000 (at least, it appeared on mine), and may be included in IE5.
You'll be breaking CopyRight laws if you make your own VB.
Don't call it VB then. :)
i made my school project (and compiled it to exe) in vb but when i got to school, it wanted the run-time files. is there any way i could compile vb and for it not to use run-time files (for the run-time to be built into the exe)?

If it's in win2000 then I guess they've been listening.This would thrill me but I can't confirm it seeing that I don't know anyone with 2000 yet.Is this the truth or are you just confirming that the runtime eventually ends up on half the machines anyway. Please let me know. I don't want to be pissed off anymore!
As for writing our own VB, we could call it NotMS and maybe we could just make a very, very basic model for fun. I always wanted to learn C++ anyway. Maybe this could come up on the projects forum. Any takers?

joey o.: It's truth - it was on my 2k system. Are you SURE you want to try to write a programming language? (K&R had a lot of trouble with B/C)
If you are thinking of making a compiler for vb..
why not just make a .exe compiler..that has the feature that gives you the option too choose which .dll you want to be added with your project.

In truth I guess I'd rather look over someones shoulder who was developing a new VB type program.Seeing that my wishes have already been answered with the runtime included in Win2000 I guess I'd rather celebrate that instead and start writing some nice and small downloads to the folks who have it! Yea! Yea! Yee-Ha! Oh Boy! Wow!
