Thought this might be helpful to some of you.
I and friends of mine have had Windows startup quit with the Windows Logo displayed. Several of my friends reinstalled Windows to solve the problem. One reformatted his C-Drive & reinstalled because he could not find another solution.
After considerable research, I discovered that various events can happen which require a response, but the Window with the Question & Reply Buttons is hidden behind the Logo.
A file called MSDOS.SYS can be edited to include "Logo=0" under "[Options]", which will prevent Logo from appearing.
All of my friends have done this with their systems. When (if) problem occurs, a message indicating the cause will be visible. In addition, on a normal startup you see some extra data.

hmm... I'll have to remember this... although the only time it happend to me I just commented out my autoexec.bat commands and those in config.sys and as crazy as it souds it actually werked...
btw... Yes I know that windows does not require nor use these files during bootup but for some strange reason it worked...

You can also hit ESCAPE when the logo screen is displayed to see what's going on behind it.

Will Escape always work?
Are you sure that Escape Key will get rid of Logo under all circumstances?
I do not know what my friends tried when Windows 9x hung on startup. I know I would have tried Escape & Cntrl-Brk.

Once the PC has hung ESCAPE won't do anything - however, if you hit ESCAPE as soon as you see the logo you can see what's going on behind the scenes which may give you a clue as to what caused the hang-up.
