I boght a machine with Win XP Home on it:(
Now I would like to install Win 2k Pro on it but when I run the disk it says "Windows detected a newer version. All setup features will be disabled"!
How do I get around this?
Any help would be appriciated!!
Simple as possible, please:)
Get a Windows boot disk, and use the fdisk program to completely wipe out the trace of your old partition. The installer then will have no choice but to let you install.
(but remember not to have any data on there worth saving ;))
Something that worked for older versions if to rename win.com to something like won.com.old
But I don't know if it still work, and if not, if you're machine will boot.
With that windows boot disk option,
which version do I use XP or win 2k?
another question is that I dont have a floppy derive on this computer,only cd-rom,
will cd-rom work for boot disks?
With the XP disk, you can use the "recovery console" option and use fdisk in there.
all I have is the restore disk that came with the pc with xp home on it
what is Fdisk?
I did a search on the internet and found that I can go into bios and set my boot drive to E:\ which is my cd drive and that should allow me to install win 2000 over win xp home. Havn't tried it yet but it sure sounds good!:D
Any comments or suggestions?
OH! You mean you ran the Win2k disc inside of Windows. That doesn't matter! Just pop the disc in, reboot, go into BIOS, allow booting from the CD-ROM and you're all set!

BTW you don't need to bother with the recovery console. It should let you do basic partition management (ie: delete/create) in the "normal" setup procedure.
ok none of this works when I reboot windows withj the 2000 cd in the tray it just flies right past it and doesnt even detect it.
Yes Ive change my boot order in my bios but nothing!!!
Any other ways to just wipe this damn xp home off my system then just start fresh with 2000???

go into your bios.. if you don't know how when you first boot ur PC it should say something like hit <del> or <f1> for setup.. so whatever it says.. hit that and it will take you into the bios (you usually have about 3-5 seconds to do this and its first thing.. before any windows screens)
so now you are in the bios... there should be an option to change the boot sequence (or something to that effect.. all bioses are different)
you need to select your CD drive as a source to boot from.. what this does is checks your cd drive when you boot to see if it has a bootable cd in it (windows 2k is one)
so once you get that done.. exit and save and your pc should reboot... now it should look at the cd drive and you will get a line on the screen that says to press any key to boot from the cd... hit any key and you will be taken into the windows 2k setup.
fromt here just follow the onscreen instructions... delete the partition that exists already (this will erase everythign) then the setup program will format your hard drive (i recommend NTFS format over FAT32) and install win2k fresh and clean
I have tried this but it just goes right past the cd and to the hard drive!
It starts to read the cd (I know this because I can here the cdrom reading) but then just stops reading and boots that crappy win xp home!

also.. is it a full copy of win2k?? i dont even know if they made an upgrade version... but if they did and thats what you have..that could be a problem
Yes I changed the boot sequence .
Yes it is a full copy from msdn with 2000 pro, server 2000, and advanced server 2000 on the disk.
never seen that copy... i have all 3 but seperate cds... perhaps that is part of your problem...Quote:

So if I copy just pro onto a disk an try running that will it boot from that copied disk?

did you burn it yourself? if so did you make sure you made it bootable?
no i didnt make it my self but Im intrigued by making your own bootable disk!
Can you in theory copy something onto a disk and in fact make it a bootable disk?
You can, however the procedure for CDs is somewhat vague to me.
You could, I suppose, simply made a DOS bootdisk with gscdrom.sys and mscdex.exe setup on it. May have to load EMS drivers as well...
But all that DOS stuff is from so long ago.....my head hurts trying to remember how to make it all work.
Still havnt figure it out Ive tried everything in the above posts searched the internet.

you can do it in ez cd creator... It has an option for bootable cd
but its gotta have something non windows programmed on it
I firugred it out!!
It was as simple as pressing the esc key as the comp booted up, which brought up a screen that let me choose which drive to boot from.
So I chose the cd rom drive and it allowed me to boot from the win2k disk!!
