Compatibility

Has anyone tested .NET based Web apps to see how they function on various browsers and versions? - any issues arisen?

I am aware that you can set VS .NET to target base level of browsers - but have heard negative comments about general compatibility and want to establish if this is founded on fact. Obviously really old browsers will struggle with most things.
