Power Supply related...

Hi I have a 250 Watt Power Supply and by some reason the power outlet have only 3 connectors...

1 is connected to HDD
2 is connected to HDD
3 is connected to DVD with a splitter which connects to floppy

Now I also want to connect a CD Burner. But since there is no power supply I am thinking about to get a splitter which makes out socket in 2 and then I can connect CD Burner.

My question is this...Is 250 Watt enough for 2 HDD, DVD, CD Burner and Floppy?

Has anyone done this b4 or does anyone knows this is reliable to do so. I don't want to go through the hassle of changing the Power Supply.

What's the rest of your system? If it's, say, a celly, I'd say it would probably fine, but if it's an Athlon of any sort I would go out and get a 350w...

250w won't be fine for that configuration then. For example, an Athlon XP 2000+ with an AGP graphics card and 3 PCI components takes up 279w, which is JUST over yours, that's with 2 HDDs and an optical drive as well. You can shave off 36w (I checked because thats how many less amps there are on the +12v rail, 3amps x 12 = 36), which brings you down to 243. Though, with 2 optical drives you will be pushing it, maybe going above 250w which will leave you with a pile of bolts for a computer. 300w should do you fine!

See if I have to go for a new power supply then I will go for 520W not 300W.

As I am thinking about to buy new computer later in which 520W will give me all the choices I need.

But so many ppl tells me that it should be fine.

Any suggestions.

You're taking a big risk if you keep your PSU... I mean, it may be fine, all components are different. But, it is possible that you could lose speed, stability, and data as a result of an underpowered computer. Personally I wouldn't take the risk.

520w is a bit much don't you think? I have a 365w and that's enough to power an Athlon XP 2000+, Radeon 9500 Pro, 1 HDD and a DVD-ROM.

Sure its like mean machine but I am thinking about upgrading my PC later this year or next year and I think I need it.

This is the configuration I am thinking of.

P4 3 GHz Dual Processor
1 GB RAM
3 HDD Each of 120 GB 10000 RPM
DVD Rom
CD Burner
DVD Burner
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Platinum
GeForce 4 Graphics Card
Infrared Port
Other Parts are same as existing PC like NIC, Keyboard, Mouse, Floppy, Modem etc...

Yipes... with that computer I think you will need that PSU ;) But if you're a gamer then I recommend against the nVidia card - look into the ATI cards.

Been running on a generic PSU rated at 250W for 2+ years, no trouble.

Back in the when 700-900Mhz was standard, a 250W was also the de facto standard if I recall correctly. A lot of people were running Durons on 200W.

So I'd say that unless your PSU is junk and doens't approach 250W, your P3-800 config should be fine on 250W.

but man...you must be loaded if you're buying that computer. just get the 520W....and get a Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB over the GF4.

Thanks M8, can you give me the exact name and model of Graphics card u r talking about...

Is that ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB...???

If I love games and also using it as a normal user like programming, creating website and other normal stuff would this graphics card u r suggesting is good for both purpose...???

yeah the 9800Pro 256...it is the "concensus" fastest consumer card around.

about the "is it good for both", very much so. for games its hte fastest bar none, and for "normal" use pretty much anything from a TNT2 up to a FireGL 8800 will be just fine...

even the TNT2 RAMDAC can do 120Hz at 1024 anyways...

however, since you're loaded :D look into getting 2 monitors. the 9800 should have a VGA and a DVI port, so you can plug in 2 monitors
