No... because then people will just spam the hell out of a forum which isn't modded that much, and it will make the post count thing pointless. And posts don't matter that much anyway. ;)
However, may a seperate counter could be used for Chit Chat posts? On GT they give out awards, and it has a counter below your name. A similar thing could be used here, but for Chit Chat posts. :)
The counters are a reflection of contribution to the site's key focus areas. This site's focus is on technology and more specifically Visual Basic -- not chit chat.
i agree with them... and pc_madness, your idea to make another counter is nice... but the normal counter should not be affected by chit-chat... look at me, i've got a long way to go to be able to have a custom avatar, and because i want a custom avatar i try to post a lot and help as much people as i can!
ironic how I have more posts than you. Although all my posts have been questions or dug up threads. And posts matter to me becuz I want to put Dead Thread Resurrector as my custom title :pQuote:

I'm not saying that it should count towards getting a custom avator, but it could be used to represent how much you contribute the community in chit chat. No all members program anymore, but still hang around for the chit chat.Quote:

I can't see any harm in a chit chat thing, as long as members don't deliberatly abuse it of course. ;)
Any comments brad?Quote:

Personally, It would add some fun if we could accumulate ticks in a seperate counter representing the number of views and responses a thread of our creation recieves. Furthurmore, if we could then have the capability to "trade" these ticks to other people, as a type of "currancy", I would find most interesting.
{After all, people who provide help, answering questions, should be rewarded, and this could be one way of doing so. }
Utimately, we could then actually have threads represent "Stocks", and perhaps "Shares" could be bought and sold. Perhaps we could have a way of creating groupings of users to represent "Corporations", where their inividual threads could be considered Corporate property.
Hmmm, a structure of commerce based upon ticks.
It'd be fun!
:)
I agree with NotLKH . It would be interesting really . Ticks are simply kind of appreciation some guys deserve here :p .
You just keep taking those tablets ;)Quote:

Sounds like prison.
well brad....you gonna take me up on my idea or thro this in the trash.......WEEE OLD TRHEAD
The forum software currently only supports one counter, so the separate counter idea -- while great -- isn't currently supported.
What is really needed is a rating system. One of the other forums I work with had a rating system prior to going to vBulletin. In the next release of vBulletin, a similar rating system has been added. This means that the counters become just that -- a counter of the number of posts. A person's status (or rating) becomes a different measurement.
Upgrading to vBulletin version 3.0 at some point after it is officially released (which it may already be - I've not checked in a while), is a part of the plans for this forum. At that point, turning on post counts in all the forums should be less of an issue.
As to switching the counts in the Chit Chat forum and any other forum on or off, I personally don't care whether they are on or off. I know that a number of people (on this and other forums) prefer that it be turned off because there are people who get high counts without ever answering a single question outside of Chit-Chat.
Brad

I do believe you can simply install a hack that allows you to have another counter. ;)
On top of the myriad of other good things the new administration has done for the board.Quote:

I wote for a seperate counter....I think it will be good for the community, and that will help the board.....just my 2cents (isn't that an american phrase or something....???)
I've been told that any hacks we install run the risk of being overwritten when the forum is upgraded to version 3 of vBulletin.
Regardless, if someone has a hack they think may survive an upgrade, let me know the details of the hack in a PM or e-mail. I'll see if I can get a system admin to look at it and consider installing it. I know that the rating hack was nixed because this feature will be added when version 3 is released and installed.
Brad!
Great that you are listening. Maybe we will get that extra counter one day. Thumbs up you you Brad.
Have you guys considered the effect of the "Post Race" (and similar threads) on any count that includes Chit Chat?
Never heard of it !!:rolleyes:Quote:

wowzers. duc may have inspired something
It was an American phrase. However, due to inflation over the past 100 or so years, it will now cost you 9.4 cents to speak your opinion.Quote:

So if you'll kindly hand over the 7.4 cents, we can go our seperate ways without anyone having to get hurt. ;) :p
Good grief  If anyone in here had an original idea it would be lonely ;)
The Tick system is used at GT to denote usefullness in answering tech questions.. it is not an indicator of frivolity or chitchattiness!
And the system we use was developed in house specifically for us by rjlohan, one of our technical admins.... it is exclusive to GT, and shows once again, that we innovate and give our members what the community wants.. the site is not for our benefit.. but theirs.
Others make seek to copy our ideas, but they miss the underlying commitment to the open source/resource ideals.
Back in your box young lady. They're pathetic, what can you do? :pQuote:
