When I highlight a cell in Excel 97 I can copy the contents as many times as I want to another cell(using crtl V) but if type something in another cell somewhere the clipboard empties itself.
This didn't use to happen with older versions of Excel or with the spreadsheet in Works (win 3.11)
I find this really annoying because with all other apps the data remains in the clipboard.
Is there some option somewhere to retain the clipboard data?

There must be an option somewhere. Works fine for me.
I'll investigate.

Sorted it
Go to Tools--->Options
Click the 'General' tab.
Make sure 'R1C1 reference style' is checked.
Dunno what it means, but this is where the problem lies.

Nope!
That's not it!
I checked that box and it made no difference.

Odd....
Hmmm... so I see. Most of the time Excel works without that problem, but occasionally it does seem to happen and I'm not entirely sure why.
When you press Ctrl + V and nothing happens, did you try using the 'Paste Special' function to see if that helps?
Could just be a bug in Excel. But to be honest I've never come across it before you mentioned it.
Sorry I can't offer a solution... :(
