I have VB.NET standard, vb.net contains Microsoft Desktop Engine (MSDE) 2000.
Is it possible for the W32.SQLExp.Worm to infect my computer?
I'm running on Windows 2000 pro.
I'm not hosting any web sites.

Do you think is nessisary to get a patch?
Has the virus died down already?
I don't really want to install anything right now because I have problems on this computer.
Slammer wasn't the first MS SQL Worm and it won't be the last. Patch your server as soon as you can. If that's not possible, put a firewall between you PC and the internet that blocks Windows Networking and TCP port 1433 and UDP port 1434, among others.
I have Norton Internet Security but how do I make it block Windows Networking and TCP port 1433 and UDP port 1434?
It should automatically set it up when you install it if it claims to be a good consumer level firewall.
If Windows Networking, TCP port 1433 and UDP port 1434 are blocked then is there still a risk, do these worms do anything other than consume network bandwich?
Yeah, a different worm could be used to remote control your PC. You need to determine what's an acceptable level of risk to yourself. MS SQL is not the only thing on your box to exploit, and you probably don't want to disconnect it from the Internet.Quote:

So It's probably a good idea to get the patch, right?
The reason why I wouldn't want to get the patch is because I'm having problems with Visual Basic.NET and the .NET framework SP2.

I can't unistall the .NET framework, I can't install the .NET framework SP2, I can't unistall Visual Basic.NET, I can't re-install Visual Basic.NET.
I'm not sure if this patch will beable to be install or if it will just cause more problems.
I might be re-formating but there's 7 users on this computer and we've got no easy way to do a full back-up.
