Hi
I am planning to buy a new PC to use for .NET development. (My current beast, a celeron 500 with 64MB REM is under spec for VS.NET).
I've come accross the following:
AMD Duron 1.3G
128MB Memory
20GB Hard drive
Firstly, is this a good computer? I've never used AMD before.
Secondly, will this be adequite to run SQL2000 & VS>NET
Also, are there any negative aspects to the spec of this machine?

It's all good, but I'd prefer 512 Mb ram, that is much faster....
I agree with Lightning that you should have more RAM, and if you can afford it go for an AMD Athlon instead of Duron as they are much faster (and slightly faster than an equivalent Pentium 4)
An AMD Duron is a good processor for the price (they're dirt cheap) - but it depends on what else you are going to use the pc for. Programming itself is mostly text editing that really doesn't require that fast a CPU, unless you're going to run MS SQL and IIS on the same box as part of your development.
ANyway, definately get more RAM, you won't regret it.

128 MB of memory is too low, you'll fall asleep with so little memory. I would go for a 40 GB hard disk though, specially if you plan to have SQL2000 and IIS.
One more thing - I am hosting IIS, Apache, using .NET and have Winamp open and playing on a Celeron 533/192MB of RAM. Maybe all you need is a RAM upgrade!
AMD Duron processor's are good for the money, but not really quick enough for your requirements.
128mb RAM? I had that in a system 3 years ago... 512mb DDR or above.
20Gb... again, it's dead old M8. 40-60Gb's fine, although you must get a 7200RPM, 5400RPM's are just too slow.
No offense, but there's an awful lot more to a system that CPU, memory & hard disk...
Get a decent motherboard. Picture your motherboard as the foundations of a house... if it's built of crap... the house'll fall down. If it's built with quality cement etc, it'll last you years.
I would strongly suggest either a 7VAXP or 7VAXPU (Ultra) by Gigabyte. I'm an authorised reseller of Gigabyte, and would recommend them to anyone... apart from rival companies where ECS or Jetway will do fine (or maybe not)! :D

Nvidia Geforce 4 MX440/460 (Again... if you're developing software, don't over-spend on GFX unless you need to)
I'de probably fire that system out @ £450 Inc VAT. That's a rough guess... I haven't got a price list in front of me at the mo :p
You'll probably be using Windows XP Home or Pro, so make sure you service pack 'em ASAP.
BTW... IIS, HUGE LOOP HOLES! NEVER EVER USE IT! :mad:

agree with Vision IT....although if you want to shave a few bucks more, use a XP1600, nonECC RAM, GA-7VAX or VAXP (the ultra is good for future upgrades but considering that you were tossing the idea of a Duron.......), no SBLive (the onboard on the 7VAX/P is pretty good already anyways)...
and see if you can get a Matrox G450 or G550...
