You need to look at the motherboard type (name, make & model), then look it up on the manufacturers site to get a list of which chips it supports ...
Yeah I know that.
Its what I teach people to do, but the computer's at home so I dunno yet.
Anyway, the dell site is an absolute *****.
Was just hoping someone might happen to know off-hand :)
Aparently you've got this custom motheboard: Intel VC820 motherboard [Intel i820 chipset]
The standard page for this one is:
http://www.intel.com/support/motherb...desktop/VC820/
& the actual processor info you need for it is here:
http://www.intel.com/support/motherb...0/procsupp.htm
& yes the dell site is $#%?{@$!!!! :p
Cheers alex. Just downloading a bios update now :)
It's possible, some BIOSes don't allow CPUs over xxxxMhz (proprietary BIOSes/boards)
It won't fry or anything if it doesn't recognize it, so try it :)
ARG!
Wrong bloody size!!!
What's the max it can take then?
No, its physically the wrong bloody size.Quote:

The 1GHz CPU here is one of those rectangular ones, like the P5 and before used to look like.
The CPU in the computer at home is a normal P-II/P-III style black cartridge
haha, there's only 2 hardware things I've never managed to keep up with, one was the difference between simms & dimms type memory, the other was the processor sizes, all this socket 7, slot 1 talk still confuses me & I haven't got a clue what processors fit what slots without looking it up. :D
I'm fine for DIMMs and SIMMS myself, and the CPU slots... I was fine the whole way along .... 386, 486, P5, P6, P-II, P-III
Well I thought I was fine for P-III.
Apparantly not now
I blame the manufacturers for not naming them Slot "smallsquarechipfitsinto" or "slotforbulkyblackrectanglewithfan"
