ok we have a computer show saturday and that means it is time to upgrade my computer. I have choosen mobo and cpu this time as eveything I have is virtually top of the line.
So what kind of mother board and cpu should and get for AMD. I want around a 1.8 to 2.0 Ghz processor comparable AMD. I just dont keep up with this hardware stuff anymore so I have no clue what I need.
oh and if the mother board spports DDR ram, can I still stick my SDRAM in there with no problems? Id rather not buy more ram for now.

XP2000+ and a KT333 or KT400 board by Epox, Abit, MSI, Shuttle, Gigabyte, or Soltek is good (listed in order of what I prefer). Sounds like it'll suit your needs withotu breaking the bank. If ya wanna pick up some PC2700 RAM that'd be good too.
He didnt say the RAM was ****ty. He said mobo's that run both are. But that is hardly useful information anyone.

The athlon 333's are nice. You may want to consider getting one.
You'll have the get an good fan. Copper is a plus. I doubt there are many, or any, 100% alluminum fans capable of cooling those monsters. You'll also have to get DDR333 RAM to get the benefit of the chip.
Getting a 2+ Ghz cpu and not using DDR or RDRAM. You may as well get a 4 MB video card, and harddrives without UDMA.

For the most part, most of them are ****ty, the ECS K7S5A doesn't have the best of quality control but it's still a good board for a cheap system, also pretty stable.
However I think you want something a little faster than that.
hmm oh well..gues I am buying more ran..ill prolly just start with 256 hat should be enough for the time being(I have close to a gig in SDRAM which is why i preferred not to buy new ram)..Quote:

I'm guessing with a GB of ram it's fast enough.
Cander you can always sell your SDRAM somewhere to cover some of your costs. eBay is good because people always pay too much :DQuote:

Well I gotta friend who is going to buy my left over bits(Dell case, mobo and 800 mhx processor) Ill just add in the memory for alittle more.
They are different slot configurations. Last Dec I bought a new board and didn;t even notice it took DDR so I have my machine all apart and realized I had different ram... since it was in the middle of the night I had to put it all back together till I could get to the store.Quote:

Guess not. No biggy though. This computer show always has excellent deals, so I can still stayin budget. Price is really no object, but why spend alot if you dont have too aye? ;)
Thanks for all the help guys. Got a good a new motherboard and AMD XP 2200.
Also I found how awesome Win 2000 is. I was afraid I would have to wipe my hard drives and start over. No problem, Win 2000 picked up everything with no problem. Just had to re-install my video card drivers. I was so happy.:D
