JoshT, how long have you been in I.T???
Firstly....
An IRQ is made up of several complex items, including I/O (Input & Output Ranges)
IRQ's are built up of hex addresses, of which I/O is one of them. Now... when a cd-rom and DVD are installed properly, they are on the same IRQ (agreed), although they are on a different I/O range. If a cd-rom and DVD are NOT installed correctly, they create an IRQ conflict. IE, the IRQ remains the same, but the IO ranges conflict. Therfore, when you disable a channel, only a certain range is disabled. If it disabled the IRQ, both the primary and secondary channels would be rendered useless. VIA boards usually come with the option on switching off a channel for diagnostics purposes.
Secondly....
Take a DETAILED look at Plextor's site, and tell me what you see regarding firmware upgrades... hmm...

Can you see any mention of media in that little description.... hmm, No!
Windows system info has not been lying to you, because you haven't looked close enough.
