The Difficulty of Side-Scrolling

I am currently thinking of undergoing a fairly large computer project and I am interested in creating a side-scrolling game (simmilar to the original Duke Nukem) and I was wondering if anybody else has made such a game?

My programming skills are intermediate so I am wondering if undergoing a side scrolling game would be too hard for somebody at my present programming skill.

If you have any experiences/refrences/tips I would really like to hear about them.

Making that kind of games is perfect for DX7. Then you could use DD. It's pretty easy when you firs understand it. I think one of the sample codes from MS in the DX7 SDK is a side scrolling img (or 3 images scrolling, so it looks like a background), so if you understand that sample, you already have the background....

Do either of you know anything about bitbliping (I think that is what its called). I was wondering if that would be easier to use then to use Direct X.

Noteme: could you refrence me to the side scrolling example from MS?

Another question, would it be easier to create a level editor and then for me to make each level that way? Or should I make each level by scratch.

If you want a scrolling background 2D game, I personally would have used DX7 (DD). Because it's fast and it's easy when you get in to it. But if you never have used DD or have no game programming experience, you may want to start with something that is a little bit easier. But if you are ready to take a dive, look at this site DirectX 4 VB

That is what you need to make the background scroll.


By the way, I think you mean bitbliping = BitBlt....If you don't know how to use any of them, I would recommend start learning DX...
