my best attempt to describe it
they have a method of teleporting photons, which is essentially transfering its quantum information by taking advantage of entanglement (entanglement is when two photons seem to be `linked` across space-time -- i.e. when you measure one of them you set the state/phase of the other one)...by combining a couple photons you can send a quantum bit of information (qubit) and there are methods in the works to send more than one bit at a time. apparently they already have quantum level logic gates...the only real problem is coming up with the "transmission lines" over which to send the information... this where teleportation could play a key role...
currently you are limited at sending information at the classical limit of the speed of light even with quantum teleportation because you have a send a message to the receiver telling them something about the setup you used to "measure" your photon...but it seems plausible that we will be able to fully take advantage of quantum mechanics and use the "spooky action at a distance" (as einstein called it) to send data faster than light speed...
the way they get around the heisenberg uncertainty principle is, the following:
you want to teleport photon A over to B.
instead of actually carrying out a measurement on A, you simulaneously send another photon, X, to strike a semi-reflective mirror at the same instant as A. you can then gain information regarding the "relative phase" of A to X
using an array of 4 "detectors"
B gets his photons, and the person at A sends the information regarding his/her measurement over to B (limited by c -- the speed of light) to tell that person wether or not A has actually been teleported over to B. apparently you can guess with 25% accuracy immediately instead of waiting for the speed of light limited transmission from A....but they are working on methods to increase that to 100%.
some researcher said in the article he plans to have a 3 node network up and running withing months!!!!
this is incredibly fascinating...and as I am only going into 3rd year univ. might plan to do a masters on this topic....
disclaimer: things said in this post are not to be taken as fact. what i have written is just a layman`s impression of the article. read the actual article for full detail. i`m sure my description was lacking in many ways :D
