What is the best version to buy if you are a newbie and don't do this for a living, but just goofing around. I see many versions listed, but know nothing about the differences. (Obviously, since I thought I could compile with Control Creation Edition 5, heh, heh) How much does visual basic cost? Or should I say, what is the lowest price anyone has found?

I think you can get the Academic Edition for about $100. Also, I think that it's best if you either buy the Professional or Enterprise edition. there is no sense buying the Learning Edition, because you know you are going to upgrade sometime later. Why not just buy the full package now and save money?

What about this?
A guy I know said he will sell me his old VB5 real cheap $25, cause he has gone on to VB6. That sounds like a pretty good deal just for someone who putters with this stuff, doesn't it? Or is that verson to antiqated?

No a good deal
Make sure its the professional version or enterprise version. VB5 is only one release back, we still use it in our company, but have finally purchased vb6. Its going to do the job you want. Of course you can wait for version 7, which is going to completely change how you go about doing things in vb.
Get it...grab it off your friend...at $25 its good value:)
