I'm using the Jabber client RhymBox, but it doesn't seem to allow me to connect to Yahoo IM. Does anyone know of a Jabber app that does, and that works. I tried a couple of other ones before and they could never connect.
And one last thing, if I want to be able to talk to people on MSN, do I need an MSN account (don't really want to register with them :p)
In answer to the second one, yes you do. Try trillian (www.trillian.cc) It has MSN, ICQ, AIM, Yahoo and IRC in one program. Me, parksie and several others on here use it, and it's cool :)

Everyone's so lazy these days. For the love of Christ take 2 minutes and register an MSN account. You'll be happier. :)
I tried Trillian, but didn't like it, and Trillian is a form of hacking (Gaining unauthorized access to a network) therefore I don't use it...

Jungle-Man: It's not about being lazy, I just don't partiularly want to register with MS. They're not exactly the most secure company in the world.
If you're that fanatical about it, don't give any personal info, make up info if you're so nervous. Personally there's no need to be nervous, none of your stuff is going to get leaked-- I've been an MSN member for 3 years now.
Well I signed up anyway :p I'm not too bothered, I just didn't really want them knowing who am I. I don't think they'll figure out who I am, I used the name Rick B - clever huh? ;)
Oh and Trillion seems really good, although I haven't had a chance to chat with anyone yet, it has a nice interface, and at least it supports AIM, MSG, ICQ, Yahoo and IRC :eek:
i use trillian, like it so much better than AIM
its not unauthorized, yahoo, msn, etc lets trillian connect. microsoft let them know of protocal changes too
AIM recently decided to let them too

I still don't like Trillian though :) it's not a very well-constructed app, crashes a lot, and the buddy list thing is just beyond me.
That's good that the providers let trillion connect to their services. I did wonder whether that was the problem when I kept getting disconnected from Yahoo, but it seemed to clear up once I completed the last bit of my registration (the e-mail came a bit late).
And I haven't had any trouble with it crashing at all. Maybe it was an older version? Also you can change skins, maybe that changes the buddy list? I'm not sure, haven't tried any other skins.
How is using a different client "hacking"? It's not unauthorised access to a network - the proprietary clients and Trillian all just generate a stream of bytes and receive a stream of bytes. The computer at the other end doesn't need to know if it's Trillian or the "proper" client, because they both use the same protocol.Quote:

I did misunderstand when I posted that, but for a while there AOL was not allowing Trillian to access the network; Trillian kept working around it, and I think AOL finally gave in and let them access the network with their client.Quote:

Bottom line is AIM is a privately owned network and you play by their rules or don't play at all, that's at least how I see it...no, I'm not a fan of AOL in the least bit, but they are a company and they are offering you a service in exchange for looking at their client and the ads on it, if you bypass that you're just cheating...
I'm glad AOL has opened the networks up though.
