{O} and {L}

In "thinking in C++" the author has these proggies with those characters near the beginning. Is this just a weird author, or does it mean something?

If you have read he say that it's for a program that he has made. I cannot tell you more because I am not sure but I think you can have that program in his website.

It puts all the makefiles together. It's explained in detail, along with the source for the programs he uses ;)
