Does it come with IE or Windows?
And does anybody know what I can do to fix it?
If I go somewhere that has a java applet, the Install on Demand thing will pop up and start downloading MS VJM...after it completes (30 mins later  ) it tells me I'm not allowed to install it because it's a "protected system component and must be installed via a updated service pack or operating system upgrade"
Clearly this is bollocks since I installed SP3 for Win2000 2 days ago...infact, that is probably what screwed it up in the first place.
It's part of IE. If there's an IE upgrade you can apply via the
MS product update page, it will bypass that nonsense.
PS: the problem may well not be the virtual machine code, but your registry.
Thanks for the reply
I've had a good nose about and indeed the actual JVM seems to be okay. It reports the latest version is installed anyway.
Any idea on what to check in the registry? I've tried reinstalling IE several times, doesn't help.
The exact error message by the way is "The microsoft virtual machine you are attempting to install is a protected system component and can only be updated with a later release of the operating system or service pack"
Bear in mind that MS's solution to "removing" the JVM as per the agreement with Sun involves overwriting it with a ludicrously old version, so you have to use the Sun Java 1.4 plugin anyway...
