i downloaded an app and it was setup.rar (from a trusted site) and i was just wondering how you opened it? is it a unix thing or can it be used for windows, sorry for the lame queastion but i have no idea?

You need WinRar to open it. You can find it here:

i think .rar is an archieve file like a zip file. This may allow you to 'unrar' it:
