If *nix supporters hate windows so much, then why are they moving to what looks identical to windows ?
I honestly have no idea. I don't think this is viable either. I mean, until benefits are apparent no-one is going to bother with it :)

I love everything except the name about Lindows... I have already bought a Microtel computer and the Click 'n' Run feature is something unique. Although I prefer to use Windows XP, I am slowly beginning to like Lindows.... I bought it mainly for testing as I will start developing software for Lindows too... (I already do for Windows, Mac and Linux OSs).
I firmly believe by the start of the next decade, Lindows and other Linux based operating systems will break the monoply. But I believe there should be a standard. I believe that programs made for Windows should run on Lindows... but that isn't so. But that isn't the case for Linux based OSs.... they have a standard which attracts me to them.
I believe that because of this, Mac and Windows are sure to die out. Windows because its against cross platform development and because of high prices and Mac, well because it exists in another universe...
My vision has always been on a cross platform programming language. Next year, I hope to make a team and begin work on such a language that will enable developers under one developing environment create software that run on any OS be it Linux based, Mac or Windows.... Wanted to know if u think this is a good idea? I already have laid plans and know a lot of people who will be willing to join me. If u are interested, please do contact me.... I currently am looking for someone with a very good technical background to write the language... And please, only C programmers...
Wally, I looked that site over pretty thoroughly a couple days ago.
There are a couple things that disturb me about it. The thing I was thinking about is why everyone hates Microsoft so much. I'm not sure if everyone thinks like this, but what I see Microsoft doing is trying to stay ahead by making up new, unnecessary and buggy technologies. Their old technologies get abandoned still full of bugs which is what their new technologies are based on.
So when I see things like ".Net is more stable and more secure" on the MS site, I wonder "Haven't you been telling us that all along? When was it ever true and why should I believe you now?"
The point is that I think a company will eventually emerge that will go slower and get things right before moving on. Microsoft products will always be buggy because they'll never stop for a few years to perfect what they already have. They're too busy trying to stay ahead.
OK, this isn't supposed to be an MS bash. But I'm wondering if Lindows isn't going to be more of the same. Trying to catch up too quickly and losing development maturity in the process. I already have one buggy OS and related products. I don't need another.
i totally agree with cafeenman, MS is pushing ahead to fast.... Lindows is good but I am sure will die out.... but other Linux OSs should dominate the market in times to come.... btw, Linux is being sued by MS at the moment, haven't u heard about it... I don't think Lindows will be able to win... MS has a strong case against them in copyright violations... I mean even there name Lindows is something that MS can sue them for... sure... I no that they combined 'L' inux and W 'indows' to make Lindows but...
Case in point : the MS law suit got thrown out. Lindows won first round.

There is that - but how about this
Because the real source is proprietary no matter how smart you are if you don't get a chance to tinker with the "under the hood code" don't really know about computers - only about a single proprietary plaform - with its strengths and weaknesses.
So the whole world gets full of people who can hack out apps for this quite-good-but not-perfect platform but really never get to grips with what lies below that level - only Microsoft are allowed to advance that level - and why should they if there is no competition?
Fine for application developers - bad in the long term for development of the industry.
After a while there is no point in making it better and no independent people working on new idea. We've pretty much got to that stage already and even on these forums no-one is going to say that the hardware or the industry is mature.
Imagine if Henry Ford had got a monopoly on the auto industry with the Model T. What would we be driving now? ("The Model-T XP? 370 HP V8 but still only good for 45mph and running on 2 inch wide crossply tires :(?)
So sorry Mircokids - I love VB and the advantages of there being a single unified platform (er Win 95 no NT erm XP :)) but I think a bit of competition (and the chance for more than one company to develop OSs) in the long term is a GOOD thing!

well yes but, u cant create something like in VB 6 and make it to compile so it works on all platforms... I am looking at something like VB6 where u can design the window but the format is universal or it can make separate compiles for Mac and all... get it?Quote:

There are things such as the Qt toolkit, the Fast Light Toolkit, etc. :)
Lindows would be a good idea if Linux was close to competing with MS on the desktop front. They are simply not anywhere close.
