Ssl On Microsoft Platform

I have a website and have set up verisign correctly and chosen a page to start protecting my website.

When users get to it they get kicked back to the entry page of my website.

But, if they log in again starting with ssl then they do not get
kicked out.

It seems the transition between non ssl and ssl is causing problems.

The site uses session variables. Vbscript, vb com, a database, javascript, and an as400. It's running on nt 4.0, iis 4.0 , vb 6.0,
sql server 7.0.

Can someone tell me how companies mangage to switch to ssl without losing data, or session variables?
